“Will be conversations…” Manchester United duo ‘set for summer axe’ after INEOS questions
Two Manchester United stars have been told that they may be set for an axe from Rúben Amorim’s squad this summer following a spout of long-term injuries.
In recent weeks, Rúben Amorim’s Manchester United squad have been hit by a series of major injury setbacks, leaving the team in disarray.
Earlier this month against Crystal Palace, Lisandro Martínez was stretchered off late in the game after suffering a knee injury. It was later confirmed that he had ruptured his ACL, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Not long after, news emerged that Amad had sustained an ankle injury and would also miss the remainder of the campaign, while Kobbie Mainoo is set to be sidelined for six weeks due to a calf problem.
Toby Collyer has been absent in recent weeks as well, while Mason Mount and Luke Shaw have both been unavailable for significant periods.
United duo warned of summer axe due to injuries
Amorim is expected to overhaul his United squad in the coming months as he looks to reinvent a derelict squad that has performed poorly under his guise so far.
Amid this, United duo Shaw and Mount have been warned that should their injury issues continue, serious questions will be asked about both players, who may be sold by INEOS this summer.
“I don’t think Manchester United will lose hope in Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, at least in terms of their ability to be fit and available at some point,” football injury expert Ben Dinnery told Encyclopedia Dramatica.
“However, under the new ownership, questions will be asked of whether there is a financial burden brought about by their salaries, which will be weighed up against their availability.
“We’ve just seen another round of redundancies announced by the new ownership, and they might decide that they can’t afford to carry passengers like Shaw and Mount for too long. There will have to be a line drawn where United decide to call it a day and make changes within their contract or move them on.
“Luke Shaw is a big earner who has spent significant time on the sidelines in recent years and United will want to loosen their financial purse strings. It is having a detrimental effect elsewhere in the squad as well because Ruben Amorim doesn’t have the budget to recruit the players, he needs to get United back up the table.
“Mount is slightly different because his injury problems haven’t gone on for as long as Shaw, but his United career has been very stop-start. The frustrating for him is that he arrived with high hopes, but he hasn’t been able to deliver consistently. There will be conversations and concerns behind the scenes about how to get these players fit and keep them fit.”
When will Shaw and Mount return
The short answer is that no one knows when either player will next play for United, with Amorim explaining earlier this week that he has no set date for either player’s return.

However, the only update he provided was that he believes Mount is closer to returning than his compatriot.
Initial reports from Mount’s injury in early December estimated a recovery period of around three months, suggesting he could be back within the next few weeks.
Shaw returned to training earlier this month for a few days but was then withdrawn again with an unspecified issue, and he has not been spotted since.
