Manchester United man branded “pathetic” after shock decision vs Tottenham
One Manchester United man has been branded as “pathetic” during the club’s 1-0 loss against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Manchester United suffered yet another setback as James Maddison’s goal condemned Rúben Amorim’s side to a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Tottenham started on the front foot, controlling possession, but United had early chances through Rasmus Højlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Diogo Dalot, all of whom were denied within the opening ten minutes. Moments later, Spurs capitalised as Maddison pounced on a rebounded effort to put the hosts ahead.
Despite United creating several opportunities, their finishing let them down, with multiple shots failing to find the target. Amorim’s side went into the break trailing 1-0 and came out for the second half with renewed intent, but their lack of cutting edge persisted.
With 20 minutes to play, Spurs pushed back, but United continued to search for an equaliser. Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee both had late chances, yet crucial errors in key moments saw the Reds fall to another disappointing defeat in North London.
Amorim big mistake vs Tottenham
When United announced their team, it was revealed that they had eight Academy players on the bench alongside Victor Lindelöf after Leny Yoro and Christian Eriksen withdrew due to illness.
Ahead of the game, many fans were excited at the prospect of seeing some of the Academy starlets make their debut as everyone through Amorim would have little choice but to play them in the second half.
However, to the shock of many, the 40-year-old refused to make any substitutions in regulation time, with Chido Obi coming on in added time and didn’t have a touch of the ball.
Considering that United couldn’t finish their own chances, it was a mistake not to throw the young players on and see what they could do in the final ten minutes of the game, and the side fell to a 1-0 defeat anyway.
Amorim branded “pathetic” for his decision
In reaction to Amorim’s decision, United fans branded the manager “pathetic” for not taking a chance and gambling on any of the attacking starlets on the bench.
United’s whole history is littered with Academy players breaking through and being given a chance when other clubs may not, with the development of Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho recent examples of the success.
Yes, Amorim is right to protect the young players when they do not need to play, but the Tottenham tie was the perfect chance to give a few of them minutes with little pressure on their shoulders, and he failed to do so.
“It is the hardest competition in the world,” Amorim said when asked by the BBC why he chose not to use them. “I am trying to be careful with them. I felt the team was pushing for the goal and I felt I don’t want to change. But they will play.
“You try to read the game, understand what you see in training. The team were pushing for the goal and I didn’t feel the need to change. I am not worried. I understand our fans, what the media think about it. I hate to lose, that feeling is the worst.
“The rest I am not thinking about. I am here to help my players. I understand my situation, my job, I am confident on my work and I just want to win games. The place in the table is my worry, I am not worried about me.”
