Manchester United’s top ten goalscorers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired – Wayne Rooney 4th
The players with the most goals for Manchester United in the nearly twelve years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired have been revealed.
With a total of 1083 goals scored by 74 different players under ten different managers, it’s safe to say that the post-Sir Alex Ferguson-era of Manchester United has seen its fair share of ups and downs.
Now under Rúben Amorim’s stewardship, two players who the Portuguese manager has coached appear in the top ten, whilst Rasmus Højlund, is just five goals away from making the list.
Away from the big-money signings, it’s a testament to United’s mantra of ‘youth, courage, success’ that five separate Carrington graduates feature on the list.
Manchester United’s 10 top goal scorers post-Sir Alex in full:
10th: Scott McTominay/Zlatan Ibrahimovic – 29 goals
8th: Mason Greenwood/Jesse Lingard – 35 goals
7th: Paul Pogba – 39 goals
6th: Romelu Lukaku – 42 goals
5th: Juan Mata – 51 goals
Signed by David Moyes in January, Juan Mata’s output in an ever-struggling Manchester United squad was deserving of far more than just four major trophy wins. In a sea of post-Fergie signings who could be called flops, Mata is one of the few exceptions.
Possibly the most elegant player to ever wear the famous red shirt, Mata’s control of the ball exuded a level of grace few Premier League players could replicate.
Best goal – Vs Liverpool (Premier League) – 14/15 season:
4th: Wayne Rooney – 56 goals
Manchester United’s all-time top scorer has easily cemented his place in the top five for post-Fergie goals. Though he was approaching his thirties when Ferguson made the decision to retire, Rooney remained a constant in the United team for several years to come.
Whilst other strikers would come and go, Rooney for the next four seasons would continue to find the back of the net for the Red Devils. Leading by example on the pitch as captain, Rooney would as he always did throughout his career sacrifice himself for the betterment of the team.
Best post-Fergie goal – Vs Stoke City (Premier League) – 16/17 season:
3rd: Anthony Martial – 90 goals
The ultimate what could have been from United’s recent history, fans of Manchester United will always be left wondering about the type of player that Anthony Martial could have become if not for his injury woes.
Making an instant impact from his very first game, when on the pitch in his early years, Martial had everything you could want in a striker. Pace, control and an excellent finish on either foot, if it wasn’t for his injuries Martial could’ve left United as one of the greats.
Best goal – Vs Liverpool (Premier League) – 15/16 season:
2nd: Bruno Fernandes – 95 goals
The current Manchester United captain has been nothing short of a revelation since he joined the Red Devils in January 2020. Celebrating his five-year anniversary at the club earlier this year, Fernandes has arguably been the best player in the dressing room since he walked through the door.
30 years old and showing no signs of slowing down, Fernandes has risen to the challenge under each manager he’s played for. Now, under current United head coach Amorim, Fernandes has continued to set the standard all other players should strive to reach.
Best goal – Vs Liverpool (Premier League) – 23/24 season:
1st: Marcus Rashford – 138 goals
Scoring over 10% of the Red Devils goals since Ferguson retired, Marcus Rashford’s goal output for the Red Devils is miles ahead of his nearest competitor. With a host of different strikes in his wheelhouse, when at his best Rashford has defied his critics time and time again.
A Carrington graduate able to score on the big occasion, Rashford’s consistently managed to find the back of the net against all three of United’s major rivals in Liverpool, Manchester City and Leeds.
Out on loan at Aston Villa as of the time of writing, those who have faith in him will still be hoping he can help United return to their former glory once again.
Best goal: vs Chelsea (EFL Cup) – 19/20 season:
Marcus Rashford has 6 goals and 2 assists against Chelsea.
