Manchester United told they cannot get rid of star who’s “completely new” under Rúben Amorim
Manchester United have been told they cannot get rid of one of their stars who has become “completely new” since Rúben Amorim joined Old Trafford.
A significant overhaul is expected at Old Trafford this summer as Rúben Amorim reshapes the Manchester United squad he has inherited from Erik ten Hag.
Several departures are already set, with Christian Eriksen, Victor Lindelöf, Jonny Evans, and Tom Heaton leaving when their contracts expire in June.
The club is also keen to move on Casemiro to reduce their wage bill, while Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia are not in Amorim’s plans and could be sold.
Additionally, speculation persists over the possible sales of Academy graduates Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, whose departures would count as “pure profit” in the club’s financial records, helping to ease budgetary constraints.
United warned against summer sale
One player who United have been warned against dumping this summer is the club’s captain, Bruno Fernandes.
Despite starting the season slowly, Fernandes now has 25 goal contributions for the club this season, the most of any player, and according to former Premier League striker Troy Deeney, has become a completely new type of player under Amorim.
Further, Deeney explained that he feels Fernandes is completely indispensable to the head coach, and if United are to get back to their best, Fernandes must be part of the equation.
“I have been critical of Fernandes over the years. He is the type of person that got away with it when the team were poor under Erik ten Hag,” Deeney wrote on BBC Sport.
“Since the new manager has come in, he has shown a completely new level of character.
“If Manchester United want to get to where they aspire to be, then they need this guy. They cannot get rid of him. It was also unbelievable technique for the free-kick.”
Fernandes is turning into a United club legend
Across the last five years of Fernandes at United, it has become almost unanimous that the £47 million paid to Sporting for the player in January 2020 is the single best purchase the club have made in the last decade.
The midfield star has since played 275 times for United to date, scoring 91 goals and assisting 79 further efforts, blowing all other players out of the water with respect to his output and achieving the status of club captain.

This has now triggered talk among fans that Fernandes should be considered among the club’s legends, considering his contributions and sacrifices in the last five seasons.
Often, a legend is cemented through their achievements at United, and with Fernandes having won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup so far, some deem this as not enough to secure himself a spot among the rest.
However, were he to help United deliver a Premier League or Champions League title before he leaves, it would be hard to argue otherwise.
