Manchester United’s 2025 summer transfer business has already seen the futures of many former Rúben Amorim players end at Old Trafford.
Manchester United’s summer transfer activity saw the club prioritise strengthening their attack, with Rúben Amorim eager to add more firepower to his side.
Around £200 million, including add-ons, was spent on Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, and Benjamin Šeško from RB Leipzig.
On deadline day, United also brought in Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp for £18 million.
Since joining, the 23-year-old has made four appearances, helping United to three wins and a draw, and earning plaudits from both former players and his current teammates.
Sharpe gives Lammens playstyle verdict
On his debut, where he kept a clean sheet against Sunderland during a 2-0 win at Old Trafford, the United faithful jokingly chanted, “Are you Schmeichel in disguise?” whenever Lammens touched the ball.
This sparked a series of comparisons between the young Belgian and United’s Great Dane, although former United winger Lee Sharp instead feels as if he is more a mixture of Schmeichel’s shot-stopping and Edwin van der Saar’s calmness.
“Senne Lammens has made some great saves already for Manchester United and seems very calm,” Sharpe told Adventure Gamers. “I’ve seen a few comparisons to Peter Schmeichel, but Peter certainly wasn’t calm!
“I can see similarities between the two in the shot stopping category and in the way he commands his box, he isn’t afraid of coming for crosses, in the same way Peter was.
“I actually see a combination of similarities between Peter and Edwin van der Sar with Lammens; he has the calmness and presence of Edwin but the shot stopping and goalkeeping prowess of Peter.
“I hope it’s not a flash in the pan for him and Manchester United and this can continue. He’s got to be consistent but you’re already seeing the confidence that he is putting into his defenders.
“He’s kept clean sheets and are keeping out shots that may well have gone in with other keepers in goal – I hope he can keep it up.”
Lammens has spelt the end of Onana’s time at United
Although Altay Bayındır was the player Lammens replaced in goal once he made his debut, the first-choice spot was initially held by André Onana, who left on loan to Turkish side Trabzonspor just before the Turkish transfer window shut.
Onana was known to be a favourite of Amorim’s in the dressing room due to his loud personality, but ultimately, his poor performances could not justify him remaining United’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Speaking further, Sharpe explained that Lammens’ good displays so far have already shown that Onana will not be returning to United and fighting for a spot once his loan spell ends.
“I would be very surprised if André Onana came back to the club after leaving on loan last summer,” Sharpe continued.
“Senne Lammens looks to have made that position his own now, and I don’t think Onana would want to come back and play second fiddle. I think we have seen the end of Onana at Old Trafford.”
