Garry Neville called a Man Utd star ‘the glue’ of Rúben Amorim’s system and is now set for a first start in five weeks.
Manchester United have been in the best form since Rúben Amorim took over, as they are now five games unbeaten in the Premier League.
The Red Devils currently sit one point behind Sunderland in fourth and two points behind Chelsea in third as United pushes for the Champions League spots.
Amorim will be hoping his side and get past the tricky test against Everton, who sit just three points behind United.
With Benjamin Šeško out, the obvious choice would be the front three that played against Liverpool, with Mason Mount returning to the side in the attacking midfield spots.
Mount adds that extra level of dynamism to the side
Despite injuries hampering his career at United so far since signing from Chelsea in 2023, it is clear to see why Amorim praised Mount as one of his most ideal profiles for his team.
Against Liverpool, he did the dirty work and led the press, as well as being pivotal for the out-of-possession tactical system for United. It is no surprise that since he has not been on the side, United have not reached the same level of performance as they did while he was in the starting XI.
Gary Neville has previously compared the role Mount plays now to the profile of player Ji-Sung Park was during the 2006 – 2011 United side that won the league four times in five years.
Speaking on Stick to Football, he said: “Do you know what I think about Mount? He reminds me, say, Darren Anderton or Adam Lallana, Ji-Sung Park, maybe a little bit.
“Players who do that sort of ugly bit well, but they also connect and glue things with, like, he starts the press.”
Mount’s chance to cement a starting position
For the first time since he joined, Mount has been consistently in the United squad, which is a massive positive for the England International.
Šeško being out for the next month at least gives the Englishman the chance to cement his selection on his side as he pushes for that return to the England camp.
The dirty work that he does is emphasised by the fact that, according to Fbref, he is in the 94th percentile in the top five leagues for tackles for attacking midfielders/wingers.
United have shown that when they start games with an aggressive tempo, they can get on top of sides and dominate. No player in the squad epitomises this more than Mount and his tactical intelligence to lead the press for the side.
Not only this, he offers tactical fluidity in the frontline with both Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, as they are all players who can interchange and add a new level of unpredictability for the opposition.
