Rúben Amorim thinks that one Manchester United star is going to have a great career after what he’s seen in recent weeks on the training pitch.

Rúben Amorim’s first three months at Manchester United have been anything but straightforward since replacing Erik ten Hag.

Taking charge in mid-November with United struggling in 13th place in the Premier League and managing just one win in the Europa League, the 40-year-old set out to steady a club in need of direction.

There have been bright moments, including impressive away wins over Arsenal and Manchester City, but inconsistency has been a persistent issue, leaving some United fans frustrated with the team’s form.

In the Premier League, United have managed just five wins from 16 matches under Amorim, though their performances in the Europa League and FA Cup have been more encouraging.

Off the pitch, the challenges have been just as significant. Three senior attackers left on loan during the winter transfer window without replacements coming in, while Lisandro Martínez and Amad have been ruled out for the rest of the season with injuries.

What Amorim saw in training

However, in the build-up to the club’s FA Cup fixture against Fulham, Amorim spoke to club media about a few of his players.

When asked about 19-year-old centre-back Leny Yoro, Amorim was full of praise, explaining that the work Yoro is doing behind the scenes is setting him up to have a great career.

“He is working really, really hard,” Amorims started. “I think he is gaining muscle. All these small things that you cannot see, he is doing.

“I think he is going to be a top, top, top player and he is going to have a great career here in Manchester. But for that, he knows that he has to prove in every match, so he is going to be ready for the next one.”

Yoro entering into surprising role

When United first signed Yoro, the idea was that he would become the right centre-back in a back four under Ten Hag, but a four-month injury in pre-season meant he never made a competitive appearance for the Dutchman before he was fired.

However, having made his debut under Amorim, the Frenchman started as a right centre-back in the club’s back three, and his passing and control with the ball has come to fruition.

But, since Martínez’s injury, Yoro has started to excel as a left centre-back, a position he has previously explained he enjoys.

While missing Martínez is significant, Yoro is doing well to cover for the Argentina international, with his recent display against Ipswich pinned as one of his best for the club so far.

It’s a surprise that Yoro has been so good on the left, considering his age and lack of experience in the position, but it’s just further proof of why United chose to spend £52 million on him after just one full season in France.
