Four Manchester United stars show complete change in key Rúben Amorim policy, says Phil Jones
Three Manchester United players have completely changed Rúben Amorim’s policy after the Leicester City win, says former centre-back Phil Jones.
Manchester United secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Leicester City, with Rasmus Højlund, Alejandro Garnacho, and Bruno Fernandes all finding the net to lift Rúben Amorim’s side to 13th in the Premier League.
The game started with both teams creating early openings, but the deadlock was broken just past the half-hour mark. Fernandes played a precise pass into Højlund’s path, and the Danish striker finished confidently to give United the lead.
Leicester responded with a spell of pressure before the break, as Wilfred Ndidi and Patson Daka both had chances, but they couldn’t find a way past United’s defence, leaving the hosts ahead at half-time.
Early in the second half, Ayden Heaven was stretchered off and replaced by Toby Collyer. Garnacho soon had the ball in the net, only for his effort to be ruled offside. However, the Argentine winger wasn’t to be denied and ten minutes later, he produced a brilliant turn and finish to double United’s advantage.
With United in control, Fernandes put the result beyond doubt in the closing stages, curling in a superb strike to cap off an impressive 3-0 win for Amorim’s men.
Four players provide “pleasing” moment vs Leicester
While Heaven’s injury has put a dampener on the celebrations, it was lovely to see that young left-back Harry Amass was able to make his debut for the club on his 18th birthday.
Speaking after the game, former United centre-back Phil Jones explained how pleased he was to see that United have started to involve many young players in their Premier League fixtures.
“It was pleasing to see the amount of young players on the pitch at the end of the game,” Jones explained to Sky Sports after initially mentioning Amass. “We saw Ayden Heaven, Toby Collyer, Chido [Obi] came off the bench as well.
“So, listen, that’s part of the United’s DNA, it’s part of the makeup of the club, is they produce good young players to come through and when they’re needed and called upon, they can produce performances and come in at a high level.”
A change in Amorim’s policy at United
Earlier this year, Amorim was keen to stress to reporters that he is hesitant to start playing Academy players as he wants to shield them from criticism.
Jones was asked if the head coach’s increasing involvement of young players in his key games is a deliberate move, to which he replied that he feels Amorim is being forced into it due to injuries.
However, Jones was also quick to point out that Amorim would not be playing the players mentioned above if he did not feel that they were good enough to cope, which shows that the 40-year-old is starting to trust the Academy.
“I think he’s had to with the amount of injuries that they’ve sustained this season,” Jones said. “It’s been really difficult to really have a solid, you know, solid back line.
“We don’t know, sometimes there’s two sixes, there’s one six, we don’t know quite who’s playing with the injuries, but I think he’s managed it reasonably well. And he’s had to put these young players, but listen, these young players wouldn’t come into the team if they weren’t good enough, and he didn’t think they were good enough, so really pleasing to see.
“But again, like I said, the most important thing for now for United is to get back everyone fit from international duty and really try and go for the Europa League, because if they can get into the Champions League next season, that’ll be a really big boost for them.”
