Manchester United have reportedly agreed terms on a contract extension with Harry Maguire, whose current deal is set to expire this summer.
Ahead of a trip to face Newcastle, Michael Carrick’s Manchester United currently sit in third place in the Premier League following their 2-1 win against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
Carrick has been seen having to rotate Lisandro Martinez out for Leny Yoro due to the Argentine’s injury. Harry Maguire has kept his name on the team sheet in every game under Carrick, proving himself as a key part of the success.
Signing from Leicester in August of 2019, Maguire has been an important player in the United squad for six years now. Playing over 260 games and providing the club with memorable, iconic performances, including the winner against Lyon in April of 2025.
As INEOS ownership looks towards a financially secure future for the club, discussions on players’ wages and transfer budgets have begun. With Carrick’s future uncertain, INEOS are likely to have a busy summer of reorganising the club.
Maguire to take a huge wage hit
The United star defender is expected to sign a contract extension with his current contract ending in June 2026. According to TeamTalk, the decision has been greenlit by Carrick, who sees Maguire as an important player to United.
The new deal is expected to fit INEOS’s financial plan, with Maguire taking a significant pay cut to extend his career at the club. The new contract would see his current £190,000-per-week salary potentially decrease to around £100,000.
This deal would likely be a one-year extension, with an option to extend further. Maguire’s age has influenced the club’s decision, but his performances have convinced them to keep him rather than entertain interest from other sides.
With Casemiro’s departure confirmed for the summer, keeping senior, experienced players at the club will be vital to the club’s future success. Maguire is expected to agree to the extension despite the potential £4,680,000-per-year hit.

Maguire interest among Premier League clubs
With Maguire’s contract nearing its end, he has attracted interest from a number of top clubs, and his financial hit could see the England international look to move on.
Maguire has reportedly attracted interest from Premier League clubs Everton and West Ham, as well as from clubs throughout Serie A. A free move for the defender could see him ease United of his high wages as he reaches the latter stages of his career.

Despite the interest, Maguire has his eyes set on remaining at United. With top prospects Yoro and Ayden Heaven rotating for United, having a senior player to learn from is key to their development, which United values highly.
Maguire looks to extend his future at the club as they enter the end of the season. The decision is yet to be confirmed, however, and with Carrick’s future not yet certain, it is possible that a different manager in the summer could have a different decision over the centre back.
