Manchester United reportedly made a decision about Raphaël Varane this summer, and replacement Jarrad Branthwaite received praise from a Premier League manager.

Raphaël Varane‘s contract is set to expire this summer after Manchester United decided not to extend it by a further year on his current terms of over £ 300,000 a week.

Although the former Real Madrid player is still widely seen as United’s best defender when fit, INEOS were looking to keep Varane on reduced terms – although new reports now state that this has changed.

According to Football Insider, a decision has now been made to part ways with Varane at the end of the season.

The report suggests that United recently held fresh talks with Varane, who is set to leave at the end of his contract. It is now presumed that INEOS will move on to new targets to replace the five-time Champions League winner.

A lot of noise has surrounded Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite as a key player that INEOS want to bring in this summer as they look to strengthen United’s English core, with the 21-year-old impressing this season.

Everton recently defeated Burnley 1-0 on the weekend, and speaking after the game, former Manchester City centre-back and now Clarets manager Vincent Kompany had only praise for the player.

“If that kid Branthwaite keeps putting his body on the line like this, I can’t keep telling my strikers [to do better],” he said.

“He’s sliding across five times and doing really well. Branthwaite is a young defender, and sometimes it’s important to stay away from the hype a little bit.

“It’s just a really objective analysis of moments where my strikers have done so well, and he gets back, sometimes his teammates get beaten, but he reads the moment to go and cover. It’s a side of the game that he has that is really promising for the future.”
