UEFA have confirmed who will officiate Manchester United’s upcoming Europa League fixture against Rangers on Thursday evening at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are preparing to resume their Europa League campaign as they host Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

The start of 2025 has been a mixed bag for the club. United began with a hard-fought draw against Liverpool, followed by an impressive victory over Arsenal that raised hopes of a consistent run.

However, a narrow and unconvincing win against Southampton – despite Amad’s brilliant hat-trick – left fans disappointed, and a 3-1 loss to Brighton soon after compounded frustrations.

The clash with Rangers provides Rúben Amorim and his side with an opportunity to reset and reconnect with supporters. Heading into the match as firm favourites, United have the chance to steady the ship.

Currently seventh in the Europa League standings – well within the automatic qualification spots for the knockout stages – a strong result would bolster their position in the top eight and lift spirits at Old Trafford.

UEFA have confirmed who will officiate the fixture.

Confirmed officials

Belgian official Erik Lambrechts (pictured below) will be the referee on Thursday evening in Manchester. Lambrechts has officiated 13 Belgian Pro League matches this season and six others in UEFA competitions.

Lambrechts has never officiated United’s first team, but refereed a United U19s UEFA Youth League win against PSV U19s in 2015. Former United Academy player Callum Gribbin scored the opener before Marcus Rashford’s second-half brace secured a 3-0 win.

So far this season, Lambrechts has issued 55 yellow cards in the Belgian domestic league and 82 across all competitions. He has issued two red cards and has awarded six penalties this season, four coming in the Belgian Pro League.

During the game, Jo de Weirdt and Nick Greenhalgh will serve as Lambrechts’ assistant referees. Nathan Verboomen will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Philippe Clement.

Bram Van Driessche has been appointed as the Video Assistant Referee. Benjamin Brand will act as assistant VAR.
