Teddy Sheringham has disagreed with Paul Scholes surrounding his rant about the “second-rate” signing of Matthijs de Ligt.

Manchester United are set to announce the signing of central defender Matthijs de Ligt in a five-year deal from Bayern Munich for a £42 million overall package.

However, former United midfielder Paul Scholes recently expressed his distaste for Erik ten Hag‘s new man, saying that he feels it’s a player who won’t get into the team.

“You know what? Manchester United are talking about bringing players in who won’t get in their team,” Scholes said.

“[De Ligt] from Bayern Munich… he’s not played for them. That’s a big concern for me, especially when Eric Dier’s playing in front of him. I’m not joking; that is a massive concern for me.

“You’re bringing in players for £40 million, £50 million, okay, just because he’s played for them three or four years ago…

“Juventus got rid of him; he wasn’t good enough at Juventus, he obviously hasn’t been good enough for Bayern Munich. He’s coming to us almost like a second-rate defender now.

“He might be [a good signing], don’t get me wrong. [His relationship with Erik ten Hag from Ajax] is a big boost, and he’s Dutch.”

However, former United striker and club legend Teddy Sheringham, who scored in the 1999 Champions League final, has disagreed, explaining that De Ligt is a good signing because he’s a leader who knows how to win.

“They need leaders,” Sherringham explained to onlinepoker.ltd. “That’s why I like the rumours about Matthijs de Ligt because even though he’s 25, he’s been there and done it, winning titles in Holland, Italy and Germany. Leaders drag other people along with you.

“Manchester United don’t need any more young players making mistakes, or players that are learning their trade and doing okay. Doing okay for Man United is not good enough. You’ve got to be challenging. You’ve got to be up there. You’ve got to be demanding of what’s happening at your football club.

“I don’t see enough big players at the club who set the standard. I really like Martinez; I think he was missed last season. He’ll make a big difference for me. I think he’s a good leader for the team.”

Further, he said: “I like the signing of Matthijs de Ligt. Erik ten Hag made him the youngest ever captain of Ajax and he has played for some big clubs in Juventus and Bayern since he left Amsterdam.

“He brings leadership qualities, and he’s got that ability to bring the ball out of defence and pick a pass. He’s calm. I think he’s a really good signing.”
