“He’ll get better…” Manchester United star’s life is about to change following Patrick Dorgu signing
One Manchester United star’s life is about to change once Rúben Amorim’s team are able to confirm the signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce next week.
Manchester United rounded off the league phase of their Europa League campaign with a composed 2-0 win over FCSB, securing progression to the knockout rounds.
United started strongly, with Kobbie Mainoo and Rasmus Højlund threatening in attack, but despite early pressure, the Reds went into half-time goalless.
At the break, Rúben Amorim introduced Amad and Alejandro Garnacho, with the latter striking the post soon after coming on. The breakthrough arrived on the hour mark, as Diogo Dalot finished a well-worked move, assisted by Mainoo. The midfielder then turned scorer, calmly slotting home United’s second.
With the game under control, United saw out the match professionally, keeping a clean sheet and confirming their place in the Europa League knockout rounds after finishing third in the league.
Højlund is suffering from those around him
Rasmus Højlund has not scored in United’s last 12 games, with the Danish international receiving a lot of criticism for his lack of impact on the side’s overall game and failure to find space in the box.
Speaking on TNT Sports, former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage was asked if he feels Højlund has enough touches in the box after anchor Jules Breach brought up that the Danish striker has only had 33 in the Premier League season, far below the likes of Liverpool’s Mohammed Salah (248) and Manchester City’s Erling Haaland (159).
“If you look at the team selected tonight, you look at the creativity in the team, you look at the dynamism, and who’s going to get balls into the box?
“So I know it’s only 33, which is not great, but as Owen’s highlighted on that analysis, he’s coming towards the ball, he wants to run him behind. So you look at Dalot, when he plays on the left, if he gets wide, he doesn’t put the balls in with his left foot.
“The right-hand side, you know, when it’s Mazraoui, not many balls come into the box. You know, Fernandes arrives late if he comes short. So I’m not surprised at that start, but he is young, he is learning.
“You know, it’s easy to say that 33 touches, but it’s a team. It’s the team that’s not getting that many touches in the box. So I have sympathy with him. He’s young, he’ll get better. But I think he’s got to define what he is.
“Is he a striker who’s going to get involved in the build-up, or is he one to run him behind? I think he wants to run him behind.”
Dorgu will change Højlund’s entire on-field life
The most significant point Savage made regarding Højlund’s lack of threat in the box is the lack of supply from the wing-backs either side of him.
With Dalot often inverted and Mazraoui not as attacking minded, two of Højlund’s biggest creative necessities are being restricted, but once Patrick Dorgu arrives and starting playing as a regular left wing-back, this will all change.
Dalot is the best suited player to the right wing-back position should Amad be played as a No. 10, and he will be able to shift back to the right and start playing more crosses directly to Højlund.
At the same time, Dorgu himself is left footed so will slot into the left wing-back position and be able to deliver a mirror of Dalot on the left hand side, which means both wing-backs and attacking midfielders will be able feed Højlund, drastically changing the number of chances he will have in front of goal.
