Manchester United fans have been told exactly what they want to hear regarding potential new left wing-back signing Patrick Dorgu.

Manchester United are prioritising the signing of a new left wing-back for Rúben Amorim in the January transfer window, as defensive issues continue to disrupt the team’s campaign, with the club having submitted multiple bids for Lecce 20-year-old Patrick Dorgu.

Defensive frailties, particularly at set pieces, have been a significant problem under Amorim’s leadership, with the left-back position identified as an area in need of immediate attention.

Luke Shaw, United’s first-choice left-back for several years, has struggled with injuries since suffering a double leg fracture in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven in 2015.

Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s understudy, has also faced a difficult spell, recently returning from a gruelling 17-month recovery following multiple surgeries on a serious knee injury.

During their absence, Diogo Dalot has been covering on the left, though Amorim has stated that the Portuguese full-back is more effective when playing in his natural role on the right-hand side.

United fans told what they want to hear about Dorgu

With Dorgu being a 20-year-old Danish international playing for a struggling Serie A side, many United fans would be forgiven for not knowing much about the player.

However, Sport Witness have come to their aid, having interviewed Nordsjælland technical director Alexander Riget, with Nordsjælland being the club that nurtured Dorgu before his move to Italy in 2023.

United fans have gone through an era of players who some feel have cared more about their own image and lifestyle rather than the club’s results, but Riget has explained that Dorgu is not that kind of man – exactly what fans will want to hear.

“The community and so on is developing with a lot of social media nowadays. He’s not that kind of personality,” Riget explained.

“He was really a football player. Like when the other players do something on the weekend, he was playing football with his brothers and sister. So he’s a real football player. He was always having a ball at his feet.”

Continuing, the 34-year-old said: “He’s also quite a silent guy. He is not one who is speaking a lot but he’s always been very determined.

“He has been in a group of players at Nordsjælland where he was not standing out, but he was a good player because we could see quite good potential in him.”

Dorgu’s mentality fits United

Riget then went on to talk about the mentality that Dorgu possesses that would be a perfect fit at United, considering the immense pressure on Amorim’s players.

“I’m not surprised from his mentality and personality that he can do it,” he said.

“Because he has never been a player who has been nervous before a game or anxious about it. I will say he is very uncomplicated. He is always like – put me on the pitch and then I will perform.

“That’s a good asset to have if you want to become a football player and I’m not surprised that he has been capable of taking the steps from a mental perspective because he’s just playing football and doing the job.”

This follows from the story Riget explained about how Nordsjælland got to know Dorgu, when he was playing above his age.

“He played in a club not far from Nordsjælland – about 10kms away. It’s called AB, it actually means Academic Football club which is a very traditional football club in Denmark.

“Our scouts gave us some tips about him and then we, including myself and some of the other ones, went out and had a good scouting process on him.

“When he was an U12s player, he played one year above his age group. We also had some other players and their parents who knew him quite well because he also has a Nigerian background and we also have some other players from Nigeria.”
