Manager admits he has changed his mind about Manchester United star – “He has really convinced me”
One national team manager has admitted that he has been convinced to call up a Manchester United star to his squad despite having initial doubts about their defensive abilities.
The last few weeks at Manchester United have been chaos, with the club playing almost twice a week every week for the last month or so, and this has certainly taken an affect on the players.
Rúben Amorim has been keen to point out that, following multiple high-intensity matches and a 120-minute game against Fulham, his players are starting to fatigue at the end of games.
This has also been compounded by the fact that the squad are missing a host of key players due to injuries, with Amad, Kobbie Mainoo, and Lisandro Martínez out for significant spells of late, among others.
However, with the March international break on the horizon, this will give many United players time to rest and train while Amorim can plan ahead for the remainder of the campaign.
Denmark boss admits Dorgu’s turned his head
However, while many players will be able to rest, the same cannot be said for Danish United trio Christian Eriksen, Rasmus Højlund, and Patrick Dorgu, who have all been called up to the national side.
With the quotes coming from Tipsbladet, Denmark international manager Brian Riemer has admitted that although he was initially unsure about Dorgu’s defensive capabilities, his performances at United have convinced him otherwise.
“He has really convinced me,” Riemer explained when discussing his decision to select Dorgu as part of the 23-man Danish squad.
“I dare to tell you now that I was a little doubtful in Lecce, because when I watched the games, he was more of a winger than a back, and his defensive skills were… debatable. But I have seen him many times now, and I am actually quite impressed with what he has achieved defensively.
“Defensively, my doubts were there, and he has convinced me there. He has done it strongly. There are still small things that can be done better, but even in the best league in the world, he has delivered.
“I think he has proven that for Manchester United. I know that they play with a wingback, but many times he has ended up as a back, and that is why I have had him under the microscope and looked at how he defends. The situations I have analysed have convinced me that he can do both.”
Multiple United players not called up to national sides
However, there have been several United players who have not been called up to represent their national sides despite usually being part of the teams.
Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee were both snubbed from the recent Dutch national squad, with manager Ronald Koeman explaining the latter has not done enough to improve himself after a tough start to life at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Martínez will miss out on playing with Argentina, with Mainoo in the same boat at England after a calf problem.
It remains to be seen whether Harry Maguire will return to England’s squad after good performances of late, although the centre-back has missed United’s last two games due to injury.
