Manchester United have received a double suspension blow against Newcastle United after their 2-0 Premier League loss against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Manchester United fell to their third defeat in a row as Rúben Amorim‘s men lost 2-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a Premier League Boxing Day fixture.

In the first half, although United created a few early chances through Noussair Mazraoui and Amad Diallo, it was Wolves who generally looked the more comfortable and dominant side.

With the tie sat at 0-0 as the half-time whistle blew, the second half saw Bruno Fernandes sent off for a second yellow card within minutes of the restart, thrusting United into a whole new dynamic.

As has been the theme with United this season, the club conceded yet another set piece, with Matheus Cunha scoring directly from his corner kick just shy of 10 minutes after the red card.

United responded with multiple substitutions, and although they continued to look for an equaliser, Wolves continued to stay staunch in front of goal.

A late push from Amorim’s men saw them have a penalty shout as Harry Maguire was brought down in the area, but VAR denied the claim, and Hwang Hee-chan scored a second in extra time to seal a 2-0 win for the home team.

United’s next game in the Premier League comes in the form of a home tie against Newcastle, with the club now sat 14th in the Premier League table.

Fernandes’ red card means that he will be banned from the tie, as all players who receive a red card as a consequence of two yellows receive a one-match ban on top of the rest of the fixture they miss on the day.

However, Amorim has also been hit with a second suspension blow. In the second half, Manuel Ugarte also found himself in the book.

This yellow card was his fifth of the season in the competition, meaning that he will also receive a one-game ban, as he received five before the halfway point of the campaign.

For Fernandes, this is the third time he’s seen red this season, having also been sent off against Tottenham Hotspur and FC Porto in the Premier League and Europa League.

Although his straight red against Tottenham was overturned, he served a one-game ban for the Porto one, and will do the same against Newcastle next week.
