Man Utd must avoid signing ‘outstanding’ defender despite ‘dream’ transfer admission

Man Utd are set for yet another busy transfer window, both in January and next summer, but there is one player they must avoid, despite a dream transfer admission.

Manchester United are now five games unbeaten and appear to have finally found their rhythm after a sluggish start to the Premier League campaign.

The Reds sit joint-fifth in the table, just a single point behind fourth-placed Sunderland. While many had written off their chances of qualifying for the Champions League earlier in the season, renewed optimism is beginning to grow.

With their forward line now addressed, United appear to already be turning their attention to next summer, with their primary objective being to recruit at least one midfielder. The club is keen to strengthen an area many supporters felt should have been reinforced in the previous transfer window.

With the severity of Benjamin Šeško’s not yet known, United may also be forced to go in for a striker in January should the Slovenian be out for a significant period of time.

Muñoz’s ‘dream’ United move

Since joining Crystal Palace in January 2024, Daniel Muñoz has been one of the league’s best wingbacks, with his performances being labelled as “outstanding“, and he was named Player of the Match in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup win, the club’s first-ever major trophy.

Some believe that United’s current wingback options could be improved, and with Muñoz playing in Oliver Glasner’s system, which is similar to Rúben Amorim’s, it’s easy to see why the Colombian would be a good fit for the team.

As well as the similarities in the tactical setups used by both managers, the 29-year-old explained in an interview what his “dream” club to play for would be, and Manchester United was one of the four clubs mentioned.

While he is one of the best wingbacks in the league, a deal for Muñoz doesn’t make sense for United at this stage, considering the players they have in that position already.

Man Utd have other transfer priorities

While naturally a right winger, Amad has been deployed as a right wingback since Amorim took over, but has enjoyed some success there, linking up brilliantly with Bryan Mbeumo down United’s right flank in recent fixtures.

Despite both of the right-sided players being attacking-minded, they have developed a great partnership, with the pair offering several good off-the-ball runs to one another during the games leading up to the November international break.

Furthermore, United’s priority next summer simply has to be to sign at least one central midfielder, a position that many think should have been addressed during the summer.

Added to that, Muñoz is a key player in Glasner’s squad, as they look to compete in the UEFA Conference League, and would not let him go on the cheap.

If anything, with Diogo Dalot struggling this season, United should look at a left wingback, but even then, Lisandro Martinez’s imminent return will push Luke Shaw to wingback, and with Harry Amass impressing so far on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, it doesn’t make sense for Amorim to be looking at a wingback at this stage.
