Manchester United’s stance on appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their next manager has been explained following Thomas Tuchel’s withdrawal from consideration.

Erik ten Hag‘s future is still up in the air, as Manchester United have yet to decide whether to keep the manager beyond this summer.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team are thought to be conducting a “season review” surrounding the Dutchman’s tenure so far, and no decision has been reached.

Part of this review has meant assessing whether there are any viable candidates to replace Ten Hag if he were to leave. Names such as Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino, Roberto de Zerbi, and Gareth Southgate have been routinely touted as options.

However, former Bayern Munich boss Tuchel has now withdrawn himself from consideration for the role. It is said that, following a meeting with Ratcliffe in Monaco last Tuesday, Tuchel felt that he would not be considered a frontrunner for the position.

With Tuchel now ruled out and Kieran McKenna, a name previously linked, having signed a new deal with Ipswich Town, INEOS have fewer ideal candidates to choose from.

Pochettino is now the only alternative manager left who has experience managing a ‘big six’ Premier League club, having guided both Tottenham and Chelsea, as well as experience at Southampton and Paris St. Germain, too.

But, according to The Telegraph, it is “unlikely “that United will appoint the former Argentina international as their next manager.

Out of the managers who have been linked to United, this leaves just Southgate, Frank, and De Zerbi as realistic options should INEOS choose to replace Ten Hag.

De Zerbi is the easiest option, as he is out of contract, while the other two are harder to achieve. Southgate will be unavailable until as late as mid-July due to England’s European Championships campaign, while Brentford would certainly put up a fight to keep Frank.
