Manchester United’s fresh stance on Matthijs de Ligt has been explained following Leny Yoro’s injury against Arsenal.

Manchester United‘s pre-season fixture against Arsenal began at a rapid pace, with both teams creating early opportunities. Amad Diallo had a promising chance but shot straight at the opposition’s goalkeeper with a scuffed effort.

Shortly after, Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Højlund combined brilliantly, with the Danish international powering past Ayden Heaven to open the scoring. Unfortunately, moments later, Højlund had to be substituted due to an unspecified injury, and Hannibal Mejbri took his place.

Gabriel Jesus managed to equalise before the 30-minute drinks break, although there were suspicions of offside. A more immediate concern arose when Leny Yoro had to be replaced during the break, marking the second injury substitution of the game.

Arsenal went on to win the game 2-1 thanks to a final goal from Gabriel Martinelli, but the bigger concern for United following the game was the two injuries sustained by Højlund and Yoro.

Manchester United confirmed on Thursday morning that Yoro will be out for three months after he suffered a fracture in his foot. It remains to be seen whether he will need surgery or not.

They also confirmed that they expect Rasmus Højlund to be out for around six weeks with a hamstring issue. It is likely he will not return until after the September international break.

With United still very much active in the transfer window, fans have started pushing the club to speed up their signing of a second centre-back before the end of August, with Matthijs de Ligt the most obvious name.

According to The Mirror, Yoro’s injury may prompt the club to take action and “ramp up” their pursuit of the Dutch international.

Erik ten Hag’s men already have a personal agreement with the 24-year-old, but there is a vast difference in valuation between what United are willing to spend and what Bayern Munich are demanding.

United are said to have bid around £30 million for the defender last week, but Bayern are holding out for at least £42 million, with the majority of his a guaranteed fee as opposed to being made up of add-ons.

“It remains to be seen whether De Ligt will come,” Ten Hag said a few weeks ago when asked about United’s interest in the 24-year-old.

“I know Matthijs well, and I will not deny that. I wanted to sign him two years ago, but at that time, he was already very far along to join Bayern Munich, but believe it or not, his name did not come from me in the process [at United].”
