Jeff Stelling considered two Manchester United players when deciding who deserves the unwanted title ‘disappointment of the season’.

The 2023/24 season is one that United fans will want to forget quickly. Ten Hag‘s side finished eighth, the club’s lowest league position since the inception of the Premier League in 1992.

Injuries and poor form from senior first-team members like Marcus Rashford have contributed to this. The winger is nowhere near his world-class attacking output, which saw him net 30 times last term. This resulted in the Englishman not being selected in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euro 2024.

Rashford could be seen as a metaphor for how badly Ten Hag’s second season has been. The 26-year-old is almost a guarantee to be involved for the Three Lions, so his omission from the 33-man preliminary selection by the England boss speaks volumes.

As the season comes to a close Jeff Stelling, 69, on talkSPORT was asked to name his ‘disappointment of the season’ and United’s No. 10 came up in the conversation.

“Biggest disappointment of the season? This is a tough one because there have been a few, and the obvious suspects are Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips.”

The 69-year-old didn’t choose Rashford but instead his on-loan teammate Sofyan Amrabat.

Inconsistent performances as well as a saturated midfield with players being selected ahead of him has meant that Amrabat will return to his parent club Fiorentina in the summer as United chose not to activate the £21.4 million buy clause attached to the loan.

The Moroccan midfielder caught the attention of those at Old Trafford because of his showings at the 2022 Qatar World Cup and this is why Stelling anointed the 27-year-old as the biggest disappointment as he failed to live up to the hype.

“I might just go for Sofyan Amrabat, who was such a star before he came to Manchester United and unfortunately just has not done it at all.
