Ahead of Manchester United’s upcoming Premier League clash with Liverpool, most fans are in agreement over a selection decision Rúben Amorim keeps making.

Manchester United will kick off 2025 with a daunting trip to Anfield on Sunday afternoon, facing Premier League leaders Liverpool in what promises to be their toughest test of the season.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool are in imperious form, sitting top of the table, while United languish in 14th place, a precarious seven points clear of the relegation zone. Manager Rúben Amorim has described the current state of the club as one of the darkest periods in its modern history.

United’s form in the league has been abysmal, with five defeats in their last six matches. Home losses to Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United have compounded their misery, while away defeats at Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers underline their struggles.

Despite the odds being stacked against them, a win at Anfield could offer United a glimmer of hope and a clean slate as they look to turn the page on a disastrous 2024.

Amorim continues to not select Collyer

Against Newcastle, Amorim had some tough selection decisions to make, with both midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Manuel Ugarte suspended for the tie.

He started Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the middle of the park with Joshua Zirkzee and Amad Diallo further forward, although he swapped Zirkzee for Mainoo after 33 minutes when it was clear the set-up wasn’t working.

All this happened while United Academy graduate Toby Collyer was sat on the bench.

Collyer made his debut for United last season and had a few appearances for Erik ten Hag before sustaining an injury while away with the England U20s, and in that time the Dutchman found himself sacked and replaced with Amorim.

Collyer returned from injury last month and has been on the bench for a few of United’s ties, but is yet to see a single minute under Amorim, which fans have been surprised about.

On X, one fan wrote: “Toby Collyer had he stayed at Brighton would be in their first team now and we’d probably be willing to buy him for silly money.

“We did well to get him, so at a time when we need high energy in the midfield, it’s baffling why he isn’t in the team. He’s 21 in 2 days, hardly a kid.”

Fans are in agreement over the Collyer selection decisions

Considering the traction the post has gained in the last two days, it’s clear that a lot of United fans agree with the sentiment.

Collyer played against Liverpool earlier this season when the league leaders joined Old Trafford, replacing Casemiro at half-time, and United looked much better for it. However, they went on to lose the tie 3-0, with two goals being scored before Collyer entered the field of play.

United’s big issue against Newcastle was their lack of intensity, and Collyer would provide exactly that.

With the club playing twice weekly for large parts of the remainder of this season, Amorim should start using Collyer as part of his rotation when Ugarte is rested or otherwise unavailable.

The head coach has been reluctant to use Academy players thus far, no doubt because he may be worried about thrusting them into such an unstable environment, but Collyer isn’t just a kid.
