The EFL has confirmed Manchester United’s referee as they welcome Leicester City to Old Trafford as a call on VAR is made.

Manchester United are preparing to take on Leicester City in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round, following the departure of Erik ten Hag as manager.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ten Hag’s assistant and former United striker, has been appointed interim manager while the club considers permanent options.

Though the length of his tenure is unknown, Van Nistelrooy will lead United against Leicester in this next round, with rumours speculating that Ruben Amorim is set to take over as the club’s permanent head coach.

United advanced to this stage with a dominant 7-0 win in the previous round. The Carabao Cup, which they won under Ten Hag in 2023, was his first trophy with the club.

The match officials for the fixture have been confirmed below.

Andrew Madley (pictured below) will referee on Wednesday afternoon at Old Trafford. Madley has officiated five domestic matches this season, including three in the Premier League, one in the Championship, and one in the Carabao Cup.

Madley refereed four United matches last term, including the glorious FA Cup final victory over Manchester City. He also refereed the clash at the Ethiad, which United lost 3-1, a 2-1 victory over Brentford, and a 3-0 win over West Ham.

So far, Coote has issued 11 yellow cards in the Premier League this season, one straight red, and one penalty in the competition. He took charge of Liverpool’s 5-1 win over West Ham in the last round of the Carabao Cup.

Nick Hopton and Constantine Hatzidakis will be Madley’s assistant referees on the sidelines during the game. Michael Salisbury has been handed the fourth official job, separating Van Nistelrooy and Steve Cooper on Wednesday evening.

Regarding VAR, it has been ruled that the technology will not be used until the competition’s semi-final, which will be a relief to United following the controversial VAR fiasco against West Ham on the weekend.
