Rio Ferdinand has highlighted two mistakes made by a Manchester United duo as Rúben Amorim’s men faced Ipswich at Old Trafford.

Despite Rúben Amorim emphasizing the importance of a strong start before the match, Ipswich took the lead within minutes. A miscommunication between Patrick Dorgu and André Onana gifted Jaden Philogene an open goal, which he duly converted.

Manchester United responded swiftly, with a superb cross from Bruno Fernandes after a free kick forcing Sam Morsy into an own goal to level the score. Just four minutes later, a chaotic sequence following a United corner ended with Matthijs de Ligt firing home to put the hosts 2-1 up.

However, the game took another turn just before half-time when Dorgu was shown a red card for a high challenge on Omari Hutchinson. Ipswich took advantage, equalising on the stroke of the whistle to leave the match finely poised at 2-2 heading into the break.

The second half at Old Trafford became a nail-biting fixture, and an early goal from Harry Maguire minutes into it secured Amorim all three points, with the players doing well to hold out for three vital Premier League points.

Ferdinand slams two players for mistakes

When reviewing footage of the first half, former United defender Rio Ferdinand chose to highlight two players who made poor errors that allowed Ipswich their opening goal.

Firstly, Ferdinand pointed out that when Dorgu was looking to bring the ball down, he did not look to see where Onana was before passing the ball, while Onana should have stayed back and waited to see how Dorgu dealt with the situation instead of rushing forward.

“Yeah, a terrible start. We were talking, look at the eyes on the ball there,” Ferdinand said while slow motion footage of the opening goal played.

“Dorgu, I don’t think at any moment looks up and sees where Onana is. I think Onana doesn’t need to come in. The fullback’s in complete control. We could just hold his ground and let him play it back to him, but the fact he’s there.

“Dorgu doesn’t look, the awareness isn’t there, and is pounced on him. A deserved lead, in that sense, pounced on a lack of concentration.”
