Manchester United star praised for unseen battle vs Ipswich Town – he won Rúben Amorim the game
One Manchester United star has been praised for doing “really well” in an unseen battle during the 3-2 win over Ipswich Town on Wednesday evening.
Manchester United edged past Ipswich Town with a 3-2 win in the Premier League, sealed by Harry Maguire’s decisive header.
Ipswich took an early lead after a defensive mix-up between Patrick Dorgu and André Onana gifted Jaden Philogene an open goal. United hit back as Bruno Fernandes’ free-kick led to a Sam Morsy own goal before Matthijs de Ligt fired home from a corner to make it 2-1.
Just before half-time, Dorgu was sent off for a high challenge on Omari Hutchinson, and Ipswich capitalised by equalising on the stroke of the whistle.
Despite being down to 10 men, United reclaimed the lead early in the second half as Maguire powered in a Fernandes corner. Amorim’s side then held firm to secure the victory.
Maguire praised for unseen battle
Fernandes was the man handed the Player of the Match award for yet another fine performance in 2025, but post-match analysis also handed another star his praises.
Maguire started in the centre of defence alongside De Ligt and Leny Yoro, and former United centre-back Rio Ferdinand took the time to highlight Maguire’s performance in his battle with Ipswich striker Liam Delap, which has gone under the radar.
“Before every game, especially as a centre-half, you go, you know, who am I going to be alongside today playing against?” Ferdinand started on TNT Sports.
“And Delap was going to be the guy around the two centre-halves, especially. And you look at it, or the three centre-halves, you look at it and you go, well, I’ve got to make sure I get up against him, work him, make sure he’s got to work hard to get any type of joy out of me.
“I thought Harry done that in the middle today really well. He did it really well.”
Maguire won Amorim the game
Maguire’s performance against Ipswich was all-encompassing, with the player performing well in attack as well as defence.

After the player was slammed for multiple mistakes against Everton during the weekend, Maguire has responded well to critics.
Yes, he scored the winning goal against Ipswich that secured Amorim’s victory, but his real winning contribution came after the second-half header, with the player throwing himself in front of every challenge and clearing the ball with every opportunity.
Maguire’s long-term future at the club is in question, but for now, he has become a key part of Amorim’s defence and considering injuries and the inconsistent form of others in the last few months, he looks like a mainstay.
