Manchester United have issued a fresh update on the fitness of Luke Shaw and Mason Mount with ten players seemingly unavailable to face Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Rúben Amorim will be looking for his Manchester United side to continue their strong Europa League run as they take on Real Sociedad in the knockout stage.

Despite their struggles in the Premier League and a recent FA Cup exit, United have won all three of their European matches under the Portuguese coach and now face La Liga opposition in the round of 16.

The first leg will take place in San Sebastián on Thursday evening, with the return fixture set for Old Trafford a week later.

With their domestic campaign faltering and their FA Cup hopes ended, winning the Europa League offers United their best chance of securing a place in next season’s Champions League.

United issue Shaw and Mount updates

Ahead of the Sociedad clash on Thursday evening, United hosted their usual open training session for the press to observe the day before, and amid that, the club issued an update to those present on Luke Shaw and Mason Mount.

Both players have been out since before the turn of the year, with Mount suffering a hamstring issue ten weeks ago, while Luke Shaw has not played since the beginning of December.

As per journalist Steven Railston from the Manchester Evening News, both Mount and Shaw are continuing individual recovery away from the rest of the first team, hence their absence from training on Wednesday morning.

“No. He’s doing his rehab but we don’t have a date for him yet,” Amorim said in late February when asked if he knew when Shaw was returning.

When pushed to comment on if the same applied to Mount, he replied: “Not specifically, no. I think he’s closer than Luke Shaw but we don’t have a specific date to return.”

Ten players unavailable vs Real Sociedad

Beyond Mount and Shaw, it was also revealed on Wednesday morning that neither Harry Maguire nor Manuel Ugarte was able to train due to “minor issues” suffered against Fulham on the weekend, and reports have since confirmed they are unlikely to travel to Spain.

“We are being careful. They cannot play the game,” Amorim said on Wednesday evening when asked about the pair’s unavailability.

However, the club were handed some good news when Toby Collyer was spotted returning to training for the first time in a few weeks, bolstering Amorim’s midfield options.

Meanwhile, six other first-team players remain sidelined, with two being Amad and Lisandro Martínez, who are out for the remainder of the season after suffering injuries in February. Amad hurt his ankle in training and Martínez sustained an ACL tear.

Altay Bayındır and Tom Heaton, second and third choices to goalkeeper André Onana, have also been sidelined with unspecified injuries, and although Bayındır uploaded footage of him working hard on his recovery two weeks ago, he has still not rejoined the group.

Finally, Kobbie Mainoo is also expected to remain out for a further few weeks after suffering a calf problem last month, and there is no return date for Jonny Evans.
