According to a new report, Luke Shaw is set to return for Rúben Amorim this week as Manchester United prepare to face Rangers in the Europa League.

Manchester United are set to return to Europa League action as they host Rangers at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

The start of 2025 has brought a mix of results for the club. A hard-fought draw against Liverpool was followed by an impressive victory over Arsenal, sparking hope for a strong run of form.

However, a narrow and underwhelming win against Southampton – despite Amad’s stunning hat-trick – left fans frustrated, and a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Brighton deepened the sense of unease.

The tie against Rangers offers Rúben Amorim and his team the perfect chance to reset and win back the backing of their supporters. United enter the match as strong favourites.

Currently seventh in the Europa League standings – within the automatic qualification spots for the knockout stages – a win would strengthen their position in the top eight and restore some much-needed confidence at Old Trafford.

United injury news as Shaw set for return

The most significant boost United have had so far this week is that defender Luke Shaw is reportedly set to return in the coming days.

According to X account UtdMenace, who often provides accurate information from within United’s first-team squad, Shaw will undergo medical tests on Wednesday, and provided the feedback is positive, he will rejoin first-team training later this week.

However, it seems as if United will be without both Victor Lindelöf and Jonny Evans for the Rangers game, although Amorim confirmed last week that the former may return before the end of the month.

Mason Mount remains out with a hamstring issue, with reports claiming he may stay unavailable until March 2025.

Amorim will address the press on Wednesday afternoon for his usual pre-match press conference and may provide an update on the fitness of his squad.

Rangers injury news

Rangers have a number of injury concerns to deal with as they travel to face United at Old Trafford.

After rotating heavily for their 5-0 cup win over Highland League outfit Fraserburgh, they were handed a boost as club captain James Tavernier started for the first time since late December after an injury.

However, former Reds Tom Lawrence and Jack Butland will be unavailable, while defenders John Souttar and Dujon Sterling remain out.

Centre-back Rafael Fernandes has arrived on loan from French club LOSC Lille as a defensive reinforcement following their injuries.
