Man Utd have given Michael Carrick a new first-team midfielder amid Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte concern

Michael Carrick now has a new midfield option at Manchester United despite there being no signings in the January transfer window.

Manchester United have been in great form since Michael Carrick took charge, with the Reds winning games against Manchester City, Arsenal and Fulham.

They will be hoping to continue winning games and secure their place in the Champions League for next season. Carrick’s side are currently in fourth-place.

But the main concern for United right now is the possibility of an injury happening in their midfield. Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte have been the only senior options for the pivot positions.

The clash against Fulham was also a reminder how the team is impacted by Casemiro coming out of the team as Ugarte is not the best replacement for him.

Still, United decided against strengthening their midfield in January with a new signing. They are instead looking to strengthen the engine room in the summer window.

Moorhouse returns to United from loan

While United decided against making any signings in the mid-season window, they have made an interesting decisions regarding one of their academy players.

Jack Moorhouse has been on loan at Leyton Orient this term and it looked like the time in League One was benefiting the young midfielder.

He had made 24 appearances so far this term, with 14 of those being starts, but United decided to recall him from the loan on deadline day.

Moorhouse has not been sent out on another loan for the second half of the season and will remain at Carrington, but he has already proven that he has surpassed Under-21s level.

Carrick has new option in Moorhouse

United might have decided to recall Moorhouse to have as an extra option in the midfield. He was on the outskirts of the first-team squad last season and now has plenty of professional games under his belt.

Moorhouse has played much of his football at Leyton Orient in a midfield pivot and could be the natural backup to Mainoo in United’s squad for the rest of the season.

As mentioned before, United’s depth in the middle is not great and injuries would impact them heavily. The return of Moorhouse will at least give Carrick another option.

Former academy player and current Orient star Demetri Mitchell has already suggested that Moorhouse will make the step up. “United fans, from what I’ve seen I think Jack Moorehouse has a real chance you know,” he recently claimed.

Mainoo has played 90 minutes in all of the last three games. That has partly been down to his performances but also due to the lack of a replacement on the bench.

It would be great if Moorhouse could prove himself as a potential squad option at United for the remainder of the season. He is a greatly admired talent in the academy and Carrick will know how to help him develop his game too.
