One Manchester United player left commentators completely stunned following a shock moment against Fulham in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

Manchester United secured their fourth victory in five matches as a deflected strike from Lisandro Martínez earned Rúben Amorim’s side a narrow 1-0 win over Fulham in a tightly contested Premier League clash on Sunday evening.

United started cautiously, allowing Fulham to dominate possession in the early stages. Alex Iwobi tested André Onana with several speculative efforts, but the United goalkeeper remained untroubled.

The visitors struggled to create opportunities in the first half, with Fulham’s defence holding firm. Amad found himself tightly marked by Antonee Robinson, who put in an exceptional display to nullify the winger’s threat.

After the break, United continued to lack urgency in attack, prompting Amorim to replace Rasmus Højlund with Joshua Zirkzee with 30 minutes remaining. Despite the change, United still found it difficult to break Fulham down, leaving Amorim visibly frustrated on the touchline.

The breakthrough finally came in the 78th minute, when Lisandro Martínez’s strike from distance took a deflection, looping over Bernd Leno and into the net. Amad appeared to have sealed the result with a stoppage-time goal, only for it to be ruled out for offside.

Though far from their best, the hard-fought 1-0 win was a vital result for United as they continued their strong run under Amorim.

Martínez leaves commentators stunned vs Fulham

Although many are celebrating Martínez’s winner and praising the centre-back for his performance, the Argentina international left TNT Sports’ commentators stunned following a collision with Adama Traore.

In the 61st minute, with the sides sat at 0-0, the Fulham winger looked to dance his way through United’s defence, but Martínez stopped him in his tracks with a dodgy tackle, which some feel should have resulted in a red card.

As the incident happened, both commentators Lucy Ward and Darren Fletcher were quick to explain that they were rather stunned with Martínez’s decision.

Just watching a replay of that, Martínez just jumps into that challenge,” former Leeds striker Ward explained. “You can see him coming when he goes into Traore, and then he comes off worse.”

In reply, main commentator Fletcher was not shy in showing how stunned he was at the moment, saying: “Tell you what… What is he thinking there?”1

Martínez admits he was luck to score

Martínez should count his lucky stars that he was not sent off either by the on-field referee or by VAR, and he explained after the fixture he was also fortunate for his goal to go in after the big deflection.

“I think I was lucky, but an important win,” he told TNT Sports. “I am happy with the way we won the game. It doesn’t matter who scores – the most important is the three points.”

Continuing, he said: “It [the win] means a lot. Not only to the fans, but for us because we have suffered a lot.

“It is a hard win, this club the pressure is hard, but we are here. We know how difficult it is. Even a game like today we have to win and be humble after winning.”
