One Manchester United star has been tipped to retire at the end of this season after he leaves this summer despite recent good performances under Rúben Amorim.

Manchester United are set to prioritise midfield reinforcements this summer as Rúben Amorim’s side continue to struggle for consistency in the middle of the pitch.

Creativity has been a persistent issue for United this season, with the team frequently failing to break down opposition defences and struggling to score more than once per game. Their inconsistent form at Old Trafford has only added to concerns over their lack of control in midfield.

In January, the club allowed several attacking players to leave on loan, with Antony joining Real Betis, Marcus Rashford moving to Aston Villa, and Ethan Wheatley heading to Walsall for the remainder of the campaign.

Meanwhile, a midfield overhaul is expected at the end of the season. Christian Eriksen is set to depart when his contract expires, while Casemiro is no longer seen as a key part of the squad’s future.

As a result, United are preparing to be active in the transfer market, targeting midfielders who can thrive under Amorim’s system and bring much-needed stability to the team.

Eriksen tipped to retire

With Eriksen’s contract expiring in the coming months, ex-Denmark international Thomas Gravesen believes that the 32-year-old may well choose to hang up his boots rather than find a new club once the season closes.

“It is 100 per cent over for Christian Eriksen at Manchester United this summer, and I also fear that his career is over,” the former Real Madrid man told Tipsbladet.

“Where is he going to go? Where will he go and earn DKK 60 million (£6.7 million) a year? I have a very hard time seeing that. But now, it could be that he could settle for much less.

“Yes, he has probably earned the money he needs to, but I think that the development that Christian has undergone in the past few years is downward.

“It is sad to see the situation Christian Eriksen is in. He’s one of the players in Denmark who has given us the most. He has shone and been our best man, so it is sad if his career ends like this.”

Eriksen’s career at United has been unfortunate

Despite Eriksen’s eight appearances so far under Amorim and recent resurgence following a couple of good performances in attacking midfield, his overall career at United has been unfortunate.

After signing on a free contract once his deal with Brentford expires, Eriksen formed a fantastic trio with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in Erik ten Hag’s midfield, but an ankle injury at the end of January 2024 halted his good form.

He became a rotation player as his legs started to fade, but at the beginning of this campaign, he began picking up good form again. However, this was short-lived once Amorim arrived, with the player being lamented for a poor performance alongside Casemiro against Newcastle.

Eriksen could still have a role to play toward the end of this season as United look to compete across the Europa League and FA Cup as well as climb up the Premier League table, but his injury during his debut campaign has had a big impact on his Old Trafford career.
