One Premier League are fearful that Manchester United are lining up their exciting manager should they decide to part ways with Ruben Amorim.
Ever since taking over in November 2024, Ruben Amorim has always made it clear that it would take time to turn Manchester United around after implementing his new 3-4-2-1 system.
United endured a torrid 2024/25 campaign, finishing an embarassing 15th in the Premier League, and losing the Europa League final against Tottenham.
Despite showing signs of positivity during pre-season and in the transfer market, they currently sit in ninth, having lost against Arsenal, drawn against Fulham, and secured a last-gasp win against Burnley thanks to a Bruno Fernandes penalty in stoppage time.
Add to that a shock exit to League Two side Grimsby Town in the League Cup, Amorim was under intense pressure going into the game against Burnley, with some rumours circulating that defeat could cost him his job.
Even though it seems like INEOS have assured Amorim that they will stick by him, results will define the United boss in the coming weeks and months.
Palace fear Glasner is United’s preference
Tension between Oliver Glasner and the Crystal Palace higher ups are at an all-time high, following disagreements over transfer strategy, even threatening to quit if Marc Guehi was sold.
Despite leading Palace to the UEFA Conference League, with less than a year remaining on his contract, this season is rumoured to be his last at Selhurst Park. It is because of this that United are reportedly monitoring the situation should they decide to replace Amorim.
Speaking on Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Transfer Correspondent Pete O’Rourke spoke on the current situation regarding Glasner’s future, explaining that a number of clubs both in the Premier League and across Europe are paying close attention to the situation.
He also stated that Palace ‘fear’ that they could lose Glanser to United if they decided to sack Amorim in the coming months.
“Glasner himself knows that he’s in a strong position,” he told Football Insider. “Things have gotten a bit tense behind the scenes, there’s no getting away from that.
“He’s in the final year of his contract, so he hold the power in terms of his long-term future. I’m sure there’ll be other clubs in the Premier League and across Europe who will be keeping tabs on the situation as well.
“So for Palace, it might not only be a case of worrying about losing their best players, they might be set to lose their manager at some point in the future too. Glasner is in control of his own destiny now with his contract running down.”
Glasner would be the best option if United part ways with Amorim
After the international break, United’s difficult start to the season continues, as they travel to the Etihad for the Manchester derby before hosting Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Despite attempting to fix last season’s goal scoring problems by signing a new forward line, the midfield remains a significant problem, which has once again failed to have been addressed.
INEOS however, are continuing to back him, hoping that he can turn the club’s fortunes around despite the fact that a number of players in his squad are not best suited for Amorim’s tactical setup.
United’s main goal this season is to secure Champions League football, or at a minimum to secure any kind of European football, and if he fails to do so and is sacked or resigns, Glasner would be a fantastic replacement considering he deploys the same 3-4-2-1 system that Amorim prefers.
