Young Portugal star ‘wants to become’ like Bruno Fernandes at Manchester United
Bruno Fernandes is seemingly inspiring the next generation of Portuguese talent as he continues his journey as Manchester United captain.
Bruno Fernandes has been a transformative figure for Manchester United since joining in January 2020. Renowned for his vision, creativity, and leadership, he quickly became the team’s key player in attack, particularly under Erik ten Hag.
Primarily operating as an attacking midfielder, Fernandes thrives in linking up play, delivering crucial passes, and scoring vital goals. His ability to dictate the tempo, coupled with a relentless work ethic and desire to press opponents, has made him indispensable in United’s midfield.

Fernandes is also a set-piece specialist, regularly taking charge of free kicks, corners, and penalties, adding another dimension to his contributions.
Fernandes’ leadership has shone through
His leadership qualities have shone through off the field, eventually earning him the captain’s armband. His competitive spirit, winning mentality, and dedication to excellence endeared him to fans and teammates.
With Fernandes at the helm, United have shown improvement in key matches, with him often being the decisive factor.
Despite the team’s ups and downs, he consistently drives their attacking play, cementing his place as one of the club’s most influential players.
Earlier this month, Fernandes was subject to back-to-back red cards against Tottenham and FC Porto, with some questioning the player for his petulance, but after a commanding display against Brentford, it seems as if the club captain is now correcting his course.
Fernandes is an inspiration
Now at 30, Fernandes is at the peak of his career, and young stars from his home country are now looking up to the Portuguese international as a reference point for their aspirations.
One such player is 18-year-old Gil Vicente U23s star Gonçalo Maia, who has revealed in a recent interview that he idolises Fernandes.
“Before joining the U23 team, I believed I was a 10, but coach Carlos Cunha and coordinator Luís Ricardo made me see that I could perform more if I played in the 6 or 8 position because I have characteristics that fit better to face the game head on,” he said.
“My reference for a few years, since he joined Sporting, has been Bruno Fernandes.
“He has spirit, a lot of character, he is a communicator, he organises, and I believe I can become like him because I can help my teammates adjust, and I also try to get in more attacking positions.”
