Following their 1-0 loss to 10-man Everton, Man Utd have now broken two shocking records, as Rúben Amorim suffers his first defeat in six games.
Manchester United suffered their first Premier League loss in six games as Everton battled to a hard-fought 1–0 victory at Old Trafford on Monday night. Although United dominated the early possession, Everton carried the greater threat, and the visitors were reduced to ten men within 15 minutes after Idrissa Gana Gueye accidentally caught teammate Michael Keane.
Even with the extra man, Rúben Amorim’s side struggled to find creativity, and a brilliant strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall put David Moyes’ team ahead. United tried to raise their intensity after conceding, but the hosts still trailed at the interval.
Mason Mount came on after the restart, with Kobbie Mainoo and Diogo Dalot entering soon after, yet Everton maintained their structure and composure. In the final 20 minutes, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, and the rest of United’s attacking unit pressed hard, and Joshua Zirkzee forced an excellent save from Jordan Pickford.
As stoppage time neared, Everton managed the closing stages expertly, securing a valuable and fully earned three points.
Man Utd’s first-ever home loss against 10 men
Despite enjoying almost 80 minutes with the man advantage, United failed to capitalise on it, with Everton keeper Jordan Pickford making a string of impressive saves to keep the Merseyside club in the lead.
Zirkzee, who was starting his first game of the season, forced a fantastic save from England’s No.1, but struggled on the whole and failed to make a strong impression on the game.
While this loss is embarrassing enough as it is, what makes it worse is that this is the first time that Man Utd have ever lost a game at Old Trafford when playing against ten men.
They had previously played 46 games against opposition who were a man down, winning 36 and drawing 10.
David Moyes’ first-ever win at Old Trafford
Before this game, David Moyes had not been able to win any of the 17 Premier League matches he had had at Old Trafford, only managing to pick up four draws at Old Trafford when managing the likes of West Ham, Sunderland and Everton.
Not only did he have a poor record against Man Utd, but also against the traditional top four in Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal, as before the 1-0 win against United, he had managed just one win in 78 Premier League games away to those teams, with the one win coming in 2023 against Arsenal when managing West Ham.
In the game, Moyes simply out-classed Amorim, making the right substitutions at the right time, and changing his tactics appropriately after the early red card.
Amorim, on the other hand, declined to alter his tactics after the man advantage, something United fans will have come to expect after his comments earlier in the season about his unwillingness to adjust his tactics no matter what.
