The FA have confirmed the match referee as Manchester United travel to face Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United kick off their FA Cup defence on Sunday afternoon with a trip to North London to face Arsenal.

The Reds lifted the trophy in May 2024, thanks to goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo, securing victory under Erik ten Hag at Wembley.

Now, eight months later, the team are led by 39-year-old Rúben Amorim, who took charge in October following Ten Hag’s dismissal. Results under Amorim have been inconsistent, but there have been flashes of promise.

The last meeting between United and Arsenal came at the Emirates Stadium in December, where the Gunners capitalised on two corners to claim victory. Despite the setback, United’s displays against top opposition away from home have earned them plaudits.

The FA have confirmed who will officiate the tie in North London.

Confirmed officials

Andy Madley (pictured below) will be the referee on Sunday afternoon in London. Madley has officiated eight Premier League matches this season, three in the Carabao Cup and two in the Championship.

Madley has met United once this season, officiating their 5-2 win over Leicester City in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, which is when Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of his first of four games as interim manager before the appointment of Amorim.

So far this season, Madley has issued 38 yellow cards in the Premier League and 51 across all competitions. He has issued two red cards, one coming from a second yellow and two penalties across all competitions.

Nick Hopton and Craig Taylor will serve as Hooper’s assistant referees during the game. Michael Salisbury will be the fourth official on Sunday afternoon, separating Amorim and Mikel Arteta.

Will there be VAR at the Emirates on Sunday?

There will be no VAR for the tie despite the fixture taking place at a Premier League stadium.

“Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will only be used in the 2024-25 Emirates FA Cup from the Fifth Round onwards,” a statement on the FA’s website read.

“It has been agreed that VAR will be utilised for every match in the Fifth Round of the competition through to the Final at Wembley Stadium, and will not be in operation for the Third and Fourth Rounds.

“VAR has only been used in the Emirates FA Cup previously for matches at Wembley Stadium and at Premier League grounds due to the infrastructure, workforce and costs that are required for its operation.

“This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking part in the same stage of the competition.”
