16 duels lost, 0 dribbles – Manchester United may rethink interest in Christian Eriksen replacement after “shocker” FA Cup display

Manchester United may have to rethink their interest in one Premier League player as a replacement for Christian Eriksen following a “shocker” FA Cup performance.

Manchester United are set to sign new attacking players this summer to boost Rúben Amorim’s forward forces for next season.

United are seeing a number of players leave the club this summer, with some reports detailing that the club want to see as many as ten leave Old Trafford before the end of August.

United want to bring in a new striker to compete with Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Højlund, but they are also keen to sign players who can play in the other positions in the front three, too.

With United no longer playing central attacking players but instead playing wide attacking midfielders, the club are looking to bring in new profiles that fit Amorim’s vision.

Eriksen to leave United this summer

One player they will be replacing is Christian Eriksen, who will exit United once his contract expires at the end of June.

“I haven’t been told anything, and when I don’t, I assume that the collaboration will stop. That’s how I interpret it. Everyone knows that the contract expires, so I reckon there is only one way”, Eriksen explained last week when asked about his contract situation.

“I have come to terms with finding a new club. Where it will be, I don’t know yet, but I am free on the market, and I have not tried that before. I was also free after the cardiac arrest, but it was a slightly different situation.”

It’s likely that Amorim will look to fill the Danish international’s slot with a more athletic player this summer.

United may rethink interest in Semenyo

Earlier this month, it was claimed that the agent of Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo had confirmed that United had entered the race to sign him this summer following the 25-year-old’s Premier League performances and amid the pending exit of Eriksen.

Amid the speculation, Semenyo put in a “shocker” performance as Bournemouth crashed out of the FA Cup at the quarter-final stage in a 2-1 loss against Manchester City.

Despite leading the tie in the 21st minute, thanks to Brazilian striker Evanilson, second-half goals from Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush saw Pep Guardiola’s men triumph at the Vitality Stadium.

Semenyo had an unfortunate part to play in this, making an error that led to Marmoush’s winning goal, and his 4.1/10 rating on FotMob shows his poor display was further than just the error.

The Ghanaian international lost 16 duels in the match across his 90-minute performance, the most of any player, and only managed to complete eight of his 11 attempted passes.

He did not complete any of his four attempted dribbles and was caught offside twice as well as dispossessed on five occasions.

With United looking for players who can step up in big fixtures when the time comes, Amorim may be better off looking elsewhere for Eriksen’s replacement this summer.
