Manchester United fans have called for the club to change Amad’s shirt number following his brilliant 12-minute hattrick against Southampton on Thursday evening.

Amad delivered a breathtaking performance on Thursday evening, scoring a sensational 12-minute hat-trick to lead Manchester United to a dramatic 3-1 comeback victory over Southampton in the Premier League.

United controlled the early possession but lacked cutting edge, while Southampton looked sharp on the counter. André Onana was forced into several outstanding saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Alejandro Garnacho came close to finding the opener, but it was Southampton who struck first, punishing United’s vulnerability at set-pieces by scoring from a corner just before half-time. For the fourth consecutive home match, Rúben Amorim’s side went into the break trailing.

The second half brought changes, with Antony replacing Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes dropping into a deeper midfield role. Despite the adjustments, United continued to struggle in front of goal, epitomised by Antony’s glaring miss from close range on the hour mark.

As the clock ticked down, Amad stepped up in spectacular fashion. With less than ten minutes remaining, he rifled a powerful shot past Aaron Ramsdale to equalise. Moments later, he latched onto a sublime pass from Christian Eriksen and coolly finished to put United ahead in the dying minutes.

Amad completed his remarkable hat-trick in stoppage time, outmuscling the Southampton defence to fire home his third and secure all three points. His heroics made him the first United player to score a hat-trick since Cristiano Ronaldo in April 2022, capping off a thrilling night at Old Trafford.

United fans call for Amad shirt-number change

Amad’s performances so far this season have cemented him as the future of United’s attack. His new five-and-a-half-year contract has committed him to Old Trafford in the long term, reflecting the impact he has had at the club.

However, some fans feel that his importance to the team could be better shown by the club gifting him a new, more prominent shirt number.

When Amad first joined United, he took the No. 19 shirt, with it only having been vacated by Marcus Rashford a few years earlier.

However, once the 2021/22 season kicked in, his number was upgraded to 16, although he wore the No. 9 shirt while on loan at Rangers.

Amad continued to hold No. 16 dear to him, keeping it when he went on loan to Sunderland for the 2022/23 season, but did have a brief spell with Sunderland’s U23s, where he wore the No. 9 shirt, too.

However, after his performance against Southampton, fans call for him to be handed either the No. 7 or No. 10 shirts.

Mason Mount currently occupies the No. 7 jersey, and it’s unlikely that he would give this up unless he left the club, but the No. 10 shirt is held by Rashford, and with the English winger likely to depart United as early as January, it would be free almost immediately.

With Amad inheriting Rashford’s old shirt when he first joined, it feels almost poetic that he could then inherit the No. 10 from the 27-year-old, too. A10 has a nice ring to it.
