Manchester United have seen one of their former players praised for leaving Old Trafford to reunite with an old teammate as Erik ten Hag’s side struggle.

Manchester United saw over £100 million worth of players depart from Erik ten Hag‘s squad in the summer, as 14 first-team players were either sold, loaned, or released from their contracts.

While five senior incoming, such as Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee, were added to the squad and complimented with a host of new Academy singing, too, some have questioned a few of the sales.

Those such as Jadon Sancho, Willy Kambwala, and Facundo Pellistri left in order to help the side raise funds, and have flourished elsewhere.

However, no player has flourished more since leaving the club in the summer than Scott McTominay. The Scottish international signed for Napoli for around £30 million and excelled in his advanced midfield role.

The 27-year-old has scored two goals in eight appearances for the Serie A outfit so far and cemented himself as a crucial part of Antonio Conte’s system, which had led to many questioning why United chose to sell the Academy graduate.

McTominay made ‘the right decision’

However, while many are busy criticising the club, former Premier League striker and well-known pundit Alan Shearer has praised McTominay for choosing to move away from United and to another country for a new experience.

“It was a wise decision for Scott McTominay to move countries and experience something different, not only on a football pitch but in life as well,” Shearer told Betfair.

“I wonder what McTominay thinks, looking back at what Man United are doing this season – or rather what they are not doing in terms of performances on the pitch.

“Scott will look at himself and think he’s made the right decision because it looks as if the move to Napoli is going well for him.”

Further, Shearer commented that the move has helped McTominay develop a good partnership with Napoli striker Romelu Lukaku. The pair previously played together at Old Trafford between 2017 and 2019.

“He’s already scored a couple of goals, he’s developing a good relationship with Romelu Lukaku, and it looks like he’s enjoying it, so from his point of view, he’s clearly made the right decision to leave Manchester United.”
