André Onana’s time at Manchester United has gone from zero to hero, as he has become one of Erik ten Hag’s best players in 2024.

André Onana was signed by Manchester United from Inter Milan for around £45 million as a replacement for the departed David de Gea, with the goalkeeper part of Erik ten Hag‘s plan to continue changing his style at Old Trafford.

However, his opening few months in Manchester saw him make a series of horror mistakes that led to the club being knocked out of the Champions League and falling behind their rivals in the Premier League table.

But 2024 has seen the Cameroon international become one of United’s most consistent performers, regularly making brilliant saves and even creating goals, such as Marcus Rashford’s against Manchester City.

According to The Athletic, Onana is “very grateful” to Ten Hag for signing him at United, as the manager pushed hard for him during the summer window to replace De Gea. Ten Hag wanted Onana as felt his passing ability — along with Lisandro Martinez — would give United options when playing through opponents’ press.

The report also explains that Onana is becoming more confident at United, and feels more faith from his teammates following initial doubts due to his mistakes in the early part of the season.

Although he is set to establish himself as a true leader in the dressing room, this will likely come, as he was a key figure among the players at Inter Milan.

According to The Athletic, Onana wants to stay at United “for a long time”. He also often stays behind for an hour or two at the Carrington training complex after team training has finished to speak about football.
