Manchester United could make a perfect £17 million transfer hijack now that a move for Manuel Ugarte is off the table.

The Reds have added two new players this summer—Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee—and were anticipated to bring Ugarte on board as well.

However, the highly credible David Ornstein has reported that the Premier League club is now focusing on other midfield options instead of Ugarte.

It was added that the only circumstance under which the Old Trafford team might revisit their interest is if the French club reduces their £51 million asking price for the 23-year-old.

Youssouf Fofana was linked with a move to United earlier this summer but has since agreed personal terms with AC Milan, and the two clubs are trying to complete a deal.

Interestingly, though, various reports have explained that Milan are refusing to offer anything more than £17 million for the French midfielder.

AS Monaco, meanwhile, have already lowered their initial £30 million asking price and will be debating whether they can almost slash that demand in half.

The Italian side’s stance was strengthened when West Ham, who were also interested in the player, exited the race for his signature.

However, with United now looking away from Ugarte for a midfielder, Fofana could provide the perfect opportunity in terms of price and quality.

The 25-year-old has the skillset to slot into the deepest role in United’s midfield and could provide a solid partner for Kobbie Mainoo in the double pivot at Old Trafford.

Fofana’s contract at the Stade Louis-II runs out at the end of next season, which explains AC Milan’s stance on the transfer fee. But United could offer somewhere between £17-25 million to try and get a deal over the line.

This might convince the French club, who are not looking to be taken advantage of by Milan despite the player’s contract expiring soon.

Speaking on the player’s potential exit, AS Monaco director Thiago Scuro said: “I’ve a good relationship with Fofana, we have been clear on the price needed since day one.

“The proposal has to be good for Fofana but also for AS Monaco; otherwise, also staying here would be a possibility.”

While Fofana would likely not be a perfect long-term option at Old Trafford, he would provide the stability and depth needed at a price that cannot be sniffed at.
