Man United no longer ‘sceptical’ about fan-favourite transfer, scouts in attendance for MOTM display
Manchester United are no longer ‘sceptical’ about a fan-favourite transfer as scouts were in attendance for a Man of the Match display.
Ruben Amorim has been at Manchester United for around a month now and has taken charge of five games so far.
With three wins, two draws and one defeat, it has been a mixed start for the 39-year-old in terms of results.
However, he will be learning important things about his players and who will fit into his long-term plans at Old Trafford.
The first major conclusion made in these early stages has been the need for a top quality left wingback, with Diogo Dalot and Tyrell Malacia leaving a lot to be desired so far.
Luke Shaw’s fitness levels have also been poor, and even when he is fit it seems more likely that he plays as a wide centre-back.
United have secured the signing of 17-year-old Diego León who could be a future solution to the problem but Amorim also needs an immediate upgrade despite United’s financial difficulties.
Fans have been calling for the return of Alvaro Fernandez, who departed the club in the summer to Benfica for a modest £5 million.
That fee meant that United were able to include a £16.5 million buyback option in his contract and he has since proven himself to be one of the best young left-backs in Europe.
A new report from GiveMeSport has explained that United were initially ‘sceptical’ of re-signing Fernandez a matter of months after he was sold to the Portuguese outfit.
However, he is now under consideration for a return as Amorim made it a priority to strengthen the left wingback position next month.
The Reds sent scouts to watch the 21-year-old play in Benfica’s 0-0 draw against Bologna in the Champions League on Wednesday evening.
Fernandez once again impressed on the night, winning the Champions League Man of the Match award after full-time.
He created two chances, completing three take-ons and made two interceptions in a solid display from left-back for the Portuguese outfit.
He has been incredibly impressive so far this season, with the most goal-creating actions of any wingback in Europe’s top six leagues. Defensive improvement has also come under the management of Roger Schmidt.
United fans will be hoping that their fan-favourite returns to Old Trafford soon and can help in Amorim’s new formation going forward.
