Man United may be forced to sell two key players this summer after new development
A new report has claimed that Manchester United may have to sell several vital squad players in a bid to not break Premier League rules.
The report, which comes from the Manchester Evening News, stated that due to the Premier League’s rules on profitability and sustainability, United are having to consider selling both Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire.
Just last season, both Maguire and McTominay were the subject of bids from fellow Premier League side West Ham, with United believed to have been open to moving the players on at the right price.
But, almost a year on, both have played vital roles as two of United’s best players in a massively underwhelming season for Erik ten Hag’s squad.
Playing the 7th and 8th most minutes in the Premier League for United this season, the duo have provided some of the few highlights the club’s fans have had this season.
Maguire, who has the most minutes of any United centre-half this season, has scored twice in his last three games, including a vital goal in the club’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Coventry City.
McTominay, meanwhile, was relied upon heavily at the start of the season and, as of the time of writing, is still the club’s third top scorer this season with 10 goals in all competitions.
Despite this, the Red Devils may be forced to move on both players in an effort to comply with the Premier League’s rules.
McTominay, in particular, stands out as a sellable asset for United, with the 27-year-old midfielder in his prime years. Additionally, McTominay as a player raised through United’s academy system would represent a pure profit sale for the club.
Both Maguire and McTominay are entering the final year of their contracts, with United having the option of adding an additional year to both deals.
Elsewhere in the report, it was stated that there is an acknowledgement within Old Trafford that whilst Maguire and McTominay will have potential suitors, several other names within the squad are unlikely to have the same.
