One Manchester United legend has told Erik ten Hag that a “really good” player should be starting the season against Manchester City.

The Reds will travel to Wembley before the beginning of the Premier League season next week to face Pep Guardiola’s men in the Community Shield.

It provides Erik ten Hag’s side with an opportunity to start the campaign on a high note by beating their rivals once again at the national stadium.

United have had a mixed pre-season with positives and negatives, but perhaps the biggest upside of the tour was the performances of Amad Diallo.

The Ivorian winger scored twice during the friendly games but displayed an incredible all-round game after ending the previous season strongly.

“He’s had to wait a long time to get his opportunity, but watching him at the back end of last season, he took his chance, and I thought he was really, really good,” Andy Cole told BetFred when asked about the 22-year-old.

Amad has now seemingly pushed even more to prove to Ten Hag that he deserves a starting spot when United line up against City at Wembley.

Cole believes that the young winger has shown the manager that he is raring to go for the new season and that he will be keen to start the opening games of the campaign.

“He’s lively, wants to get on the ball and do something. He’s been up there with his performances in pre-season,” he added.

“When you’re doing that, all you can try and do is force the manager’s hand and I think that’s exactly what he’s trying to do.

“His performances have been really good, he’s been lively, and that’s what pre-season is all about because he’s showing the manager that he’s in good form and really wants to start the season.”
