Manchester United confirmed the departure of Erik ten Hag’s first-team coach Eric Ramsay on Monday evening.

Ramsay, 32, will become the youngest head coach in MLS history when he moves to Minnesota United following United’s game against Manchester City next weekend.

“We would like to thank Eric for his contribution, and wish him the best of luck in the US in his first head-coach role,” a United statement read.

Interestingly, however, was the additional information that the club provided, stating that Ten Hag’s current staff will take the burden of Ramsay’s role when he departs.

“His responsibilities will be shared across the rest of the coaching team for the remainder of the season,” the club explained.

Of course, Ramsay is not simply United’s set-piece coach anymore. That was his original role under Ole Gunnar Solskjær when he joined from Chelsea in 2021, but he has since become an integral part of Ten Hag’s general coaching staff.

Ramsay would lead first-team sessions alongside several other roles for the club.

The fact that United have not replaced Ramsay, who was clearly important in Ten Hag’s structure, and that his responsibilities will just be passed onto the current staff does not spell confidence from INEOS.

Ten Hag has already stated the importance of finishing in the Champions League spots this season, and many believe that the end of season form could have an impact on whether he’s at Old Trafford next term.

Losing Ramsay will undoubtedly be a blow for the team. Despite mockery around him in the fanbase and United’s set-pieces, that is not his role, and he is one of the most highly rated young coaches in the country – hence why he has been picked up to be the youngest coach in MLS history.

United need to be at their strongest right now, and this, alongside Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent comments, could suggest that INEOS are not completely confident that Ten Hag is the man to take charge of the club following this season.
