Man United drop multiple Alejandro Garnacho kit number change hints
Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho broke into the first-team last season under Erik ten Hag whilst wearing the no.49.
The teenager made 19 Premier League appearances for United in his breakthrough campaign and impressed, especially in his cameos off the bench.
Important assists and winning goals came throughout the term, including a game-winning pass to set up Marcus Rashford in the Manchester Derby, as well as a 93rd minute winner against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Following his emergence, it seemed likely that Garnacho would be handed the iconic no.7 shirt at the club – the kit worn by his idol Cristiano Ronaldo before his Old Trafford departure.
However, after new signing Mason Mount was provided with the historic number, Garnacho could be looking elsewhere for an upgrade on his current no.49.
After returning to Carrington on Saturday, alongside other international players, it was interesting to note that Garnacho did not have a kit number on the training shirt that he was wearing.
The talented Argentine is also still not a printable option on the club website on the new 2023/24 home shirt.
Both of these hints suggest that a new number awaits the 18-year-old next season.
With kit numbers that are currently vacant at the club, there are two shirt numbers that Garnacho could switch to.
The no.15 and no.24 are both available and either of these would signify the increasing importance he has in Ten Hag’s squad.
However, in terms of kit numbers that are currently filled, but a swap could occur, there are three clear options.
Raphael Varane currently occupies the no. 19 shirt, however, there is a chance he may change his number. Varane was, for the majority of his time, the no. 4 during his international career with France; and with Phil Jones vacating this shirt, Varane may pick this top for the upcoming season, leaving 19 available for the teenager.
The likely exit of no.17 Fred could also open another option for the teenager, who would then be able to have his favourite number on his shirt, albeit with the number one beforehand.
And finally, the no.11 shirt is another iconic shirt number at Old Trafford and that could become available after the future of Mason Greenwood is decided.
