Maguire, Shaw, Martínez: Man Utd injury news and return dates vs Newcastle, four returns possible (Premier League)

Michael Carrick will be hoping for good news on four players as Manchester United travel to face Newcastle in the Premier League on Wednesday evening.

Michael Carrick’s wonderful streak at Manchester United continued on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought win over Crystal Palace that moved the club up to third in the Premier League table.

Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Šeško helped United fight back from conceding an early strike, and following the victory, attention now turns to facing Eddie Howe’s Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

The Reds have not won at the famous ground since October 2020, when goals from Harry Maguire, Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and Aaron Wan-Bissaka secured a brilliant 4-1 away win, but Wednesday evening presents a perfect chance to end this barren record.

Having just lost 3-2 against Everton at their own ground, Newcastle sit 13th in the Premier League table and have lost four of their last five in the competition, suggesting they are there for the taking. But make no mistake, it will be a strong, hard atmosphere that United will face on Wednesday evening.

Below is the summary of United’s latest injury news, including updates on Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire.

Luke Shaw

What happened: In the 24th minute of the tie against Crystal Palace, Shaw was replaced by Noussair Mazraoui at left-back after going down and being taken off by the team physios.

What was said: “They just weren’t feeling too well, so hopefully they will be feeling better soon,” the United boss said when asked about Shaw and Maguire.

Possible return date: Wednesday, 4 March – Newcastle (A).

Harry Maguire

What happened: With five minutes to play against Crystal Palace, Maguire was taken off and replaced by Ayden Heaven, with those in the stadium spotting the English defender heading straight down the tunnel.

What was said: As mentioned above, Carrick said that both Maguire and Shaw “weren’t feeling too well,” with the hope being that they will be better “soon” for the Reds.

Possible return date: Wednesday, 4 March – Newcastle (A).

Lisandro Martínez

What happened: Having started every game under Carrick, Lisandro Martínez was absent from the squads that faced Everton and Crystal Palace due to a minor calf problem.

What was said: “We will have to wait and see,” Carrick said on Sunday. “He’s close, he’s not far away. It’s hard to say at the moment.”

Possible return date: Wednesday, 4 March – Newcastle (A).

Mason Mount

What happened: Mason Mount has not featured in United’s last five league games since sustaining a knock in training.

What’s been said: “Mason is getting closer, really,” explained Carrick on Friday. “He’s on the grass, and he’s getting closer; he’s looking to train and be in around it pretty soon.

“He’s getting close. He’s just had to be patient really and he’s a big player so we’re looking after him, making sure he’s ready for a big finish to the season. The good news is he’s getting really close.

Possible return date: Wednesday, 4 March – Newcastle (A).

Matthijs de Ligt

What happened: Matthijs de Ligt has missed every one of United’s fixtures since the end of November with a back injury, having played every minute of the first 13 Premier League games of United’s season.

What’s been said: “Matthijs, he’s had a back issue, which has been a little bit slower to progress really,” Carrick said last week. It’s something we’ve been working through, and he’s getting there. He’s in the right direction, but, as I said, he’s just a little bit further behind [Mount].”

Possible return date: 15 March – Aston Villa (H).

Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu

What happened: Amid a fantastic run of form, Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu sustained a hamstring injury against Arsenal in January, with initial reports suggesting that he could miss ten weeks of action.

What’s been said: According to recent reports, Dorgu is now not expected to return from injury until mid-April.

Expected return date: Saturday, 18 April – Chelsea (A).
