Rúben Amorim has delivered the latest injury news on his Manchester United squad as they prepare to face Everton in their fourth pre-season fixture.
Manchester United are preparing for their penultimate pre-season fixture of 2025 as Rúben Amorim focuses on their third and final Premier League Summer Series tie against Everton.
After drawing 0-0 against Leeds United in Sweden two weeks ago, they flew to the United States to compete in the Premier League’s staple pre-season competition.
United’s first fixture, in New Jersey, resulted in a positive 2-1 win against West Ham, which the squad then followed up by thumping Bournemouth 4-1 in Chicago.
Next, they will play their final fixture of the tournament against Everton in Atalanta, before flying back to Manchester to play Fiorentina at Old Trafford, seven days before their 2025/26 season opener against Arsenal at the same ground.
Amorim confirms Maguire injury issue
While most of the starting XI against Bournemouth played 70 minutes, Harry Maguire only played 45 minutes before being replaced by Matthijs de Ligt, marking the second time in three pre-season games he had to be substituted early.
“He had an issue during the holidays, during training,” Amorim confirmed following the Bournemouth win. “They were training in the holidays. He’s a little bit late, so we have to be careful with him.
“It’s just a little bit fatigue with the trainings, so we are trying to control everything and saving all the players, to give the exact minutes they need.”
Aside from Maguire, Noussair Mazraoui has missed the last few training sessions due to a minor issue, while Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly continuing to train alone as he recovers from a problem he suffered two weeks ago.
Cunha and Mbeumo to return vs Everton
In more positive news, Matheus Cunha is set to return to United’s starting team when they line up to face Everton on Sunday evening.
Although he did not play against Bournemouth, Amorim quickly confirmed that the Brazilian’s absence was just down to fatigue and managing his minutes, rather than any injury issues.
It’s also possible that United’s faithful will finally see new signing Bryan Mbeumo in action for the first time. The 25-year-old has been with the squad for the last two fixtures but has not been in the matchday team, as he is behind the rest in his fitness.
However, Aorim confirmed last week that the aim is to give Mbeumo his first minutes in Red during the Everton game, although it’s unclear whether this will be in the starting XI or off the bench.
