All the latest on when Manchester United’s players are set to return from injury as Rúben Amorim prepares his side to take on Liverpool in the Premier League.

Manchester United are set to start 2025 with a monumental challenge as they travel to Anfield to face Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Arne Slot’s side are in sensational form, sitting comfortably at the summit of the table. In contrast, United are enduring a torrid season, positioned 14th and just seven points above the relegation zone. Head coach Rúben Amorim has admitted that the club are navigating one of the bleakest chapters in their recent history.

United’s struggles have been glaring, with five losses in their last six league games. Their defeats include disappointing home results against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Newcastle United, along with away losses to Arsenal and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

While an upset at Anfield seems improbable, a victory would be transformative for United, offering a chance to reset and leave the disappointments of 2024 behind.

Below, we have summarised when all of the United players who missed the fixture through injury or suspension will return for Amorim.

Mason Mount

What happened: Midfielder Mason Mount was taken off just 13 minutes into United’s win over Manchester City last month after recovering from multiple injuries that have kept him out this season.

It was since revealed that he had suffered a hamstring issue after a hyperextension in his leg, where his tendon had been affected.

What Amorim said: “He’s really sad. In the dressing room he was really, really sad so we need to help him. When player is in this moment with a lot of injuries and with this schedule, it’s really hard for them.”

Potential return date: March 2025.

Victor Lindelöf

What happened: Just before half-time of United’s Carabao Cup loss against Tottenham Hotspur, Lindelöf was taken off with an apparent problem and headed straight down the tunnel to the changing room, looking visibly upset.

What Amorim said: “He has something we have to assess to say specifically what he has, but it’s tough to lose a player,” after the game, with no update on the player since.

Potential return date: January 2025.

Luke Shaw

What happened: Less than two weeks after returning from a long-term injury, Shaw suffered another setback in training and was ruled out for the rest of the month, although reports suggested that the injury was not too serious.

What Amorim said: “We will try to find a better way to recover these kind of guys like Mount and Luke Shaw because after a few weeks and a few months, they will be ready to cope with a lot of things.”

Potential return date: January 2025.

Bruno Fernandes

What happened: Fernandes was sent off during United’s Premier League tie against Wolves after he received two yellow cards, leaving him with a one-match suspension that he then served against Newcastle.

What Amorim said: “I will always be frustrated with a red card, but it can happen. He wanted to go for the ball. It’s not like he wanted to stop a play with a yellow — he wants to go to the ball. The other guy touched the ball first, and there was a contact. That thing is tough on him, also.”

Potential return date: 5 January 2025 (vs Liverpool).

Manuel Ugarte

What happened: Against Wolves, Ugarte picked up his fifth Premier League yellow card of the season, resulting in a one-match suspension which he served against Newcastle.

What Amorim said: Amorim made no comment on Ugarte but has previously spoken about how he appreciates the player’s intensity.

Potential return date: 5 January 2025 (vs Liverpool).
