The latest Gareth Southgate comments on Luke Shaw’s injury fitness as Harry Maguire faces missing out on EURO 2024 with England.

As the domestic season concluded with Manchester United defeating Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final, many are now looking towards the upcoming European Championships for the summer footballing fix.

With the biggest countries in the world, such as Portugal, France, and Germany, all preparing their squads for the tournament, England has several injury issues that need to be clarified in the coming days.

Two of those are United duo Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, who both missed the FA Cup final due to injury.

The latest on Shaw, provided by Southgate on Sunday, was that he was “progressing well” in his reovery as he looks to return to football for the first time in four months.

A subsequent report from The Telegraph has revealed that Shaw has returned to training and is set to follow a tailor-made training plan to ensure his fitness regains as soon as possible.

“There’s 33 (players) who are desperate to be involved, and we know the qualities that he has and absolutely what he’s capable of doing,” Southgate said on Shaw. “That’s not in any question. As I said (before), he’s a player that we love having with the group and, for us, he’s a great character to work with.”

However, the news is not so bright for Maguire. With the squad’s submission deadline at 11 p.m. on Friday evening, the Daily Mail now reports that doubts are emerging over Harry Maguire’s fitness ahead of England’s squad announcement.

The report states that Maguire is not training with the squad on Thursday, adding to the fears that he is struggling to be fit for the tournament.
