Luis Nani has provided some advice for Alejandro Garnacho to help fix his problems at Manchester United this season.
Alejandro Garnacho has been a first-team player at Manchester United for several years now despite still being only 20 years of age.
Ralf Rangnick brought through the Academy starlet in the back-end of the 2021/22 campaign, where he was the standout performer in the youth setup.
He then emerged as an effective option off the bench in Erik ten Hag’s first season in charge before becoming a regular starter in the 2023/24 campaign.
Once again this season, Garnacho has started the majority of games for United but he has gone through difficult spells of form.
The Argentine scored against Leicester City earlier this month which ended a 24-game goal drought and he will be hoping to turn things around in the back-end of the season.
Nani unsure on Garnacho after questionable form
Former United winger Luis Nani has offered his assessment on Garnacho and suggested that he rated the player very highly before some questionable form raised some doubts in his mind
“I thought he could be the player in the next years to carry Man United on his back, show what the real wingers were doing in the last few years,” Nani said on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.
“He was scoring a lot of goals, he had power, he had skills but I don’t if it’s the system, changing to a new coach or if the balance of the team is not helping.
“But he’s still young, you never know, it’s all about mentality. If he focuses and starts putting very consistent performances during one season, maybe we can see a different player again and we can have a fantastic player.”
In the Premier League so far this season, Garnacho has just four goals and one assist in 28 appearances.
Nani explains where Garnacho must improve
When asked about what the young winger needs to improve, Nani explained how he needs to realise what the team needs in certain moments, and when to look to pass to his teammates instead of shooting.
“The team need him, he needs to perform and he needs to know what the team needs because sometimes the team needs assists and not the goal,” the 38-year-old continued.
“I see on many opportunities he wants to score where the angle is not perfect and a teammate is free.
“This is the player who makes the difference, you have a chance and you need to make the best decision in the right moment.”
United fans will mostly agree with that assessment, with Garnacho’s decision-making in the final third still sometimes leaving a lot to be desired.
It feels like playing him on the right side helps solve some of that issue, with the 20-year-old better at finding his teammates with passes inside from that flank rather than the left.

Ruben Amorim has suggested that he prefers the winger from that side and Garnacho will be hoping to prove the doubters wrong by improving his game.
