Mason Mount made his unofficial debut for Manchester United on Wednesday against Leeds United.

The English midfielder moved to Old Trafford from boyhood club Chelsea for a £55 million fee. Erik ten Hag rates the player highly and believes he can add to the quality in United’s engine room.

With seven games of pre-season left, there is much time for Mount to settle into Ten Hag’s squad before the Premier League campaign begins in August.

Both player and manager have spoken about his best position in the United side. It seems that he will be playing as a number eight with almost equal importance in and out of possession.

We already seen a sneak peak of Mount’s pressing abilities against Leeds, after he pickpocketed a defender and attempted a lobbed shot from almost 40 yards which fell onto the roof of the net.

Louis Saha, two time Premier League champion with United, believes that the signing of Mount is a positive one for The Reds and the player.

“It’s a great transfer,” the former United striker told BetFred. “He’s a terrific lad, who has a lot of potential and he still has plenty of room to improve. Manchester United can provide a lot of excitement for him and his career, so it’s going to be great to see him in action.

Mount has previously explained that he is eager to learn from the more experienced players in the midfield ranks. Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes all have bundles of knowledge that Mount can learn from.

“You look at the players that are in midfield and it’s vast experience of winning major trophies and quality players, being able to learn from them as well as bring my style into the team – that’s what it’s all about,” he explained during his first interview for the club.

This is a notion that Saha also believes will be great for the new signing. Despite the midfielder having several impressive skills, the former United forward states that two players in particular will help Mount find another level.

“The likes of Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes are going to make Mason a better player and I really believe that Erik ten Hag has made a great signing because of how reliable Mason is as a player, how smart he is on the move and the fact that he’s a guaranteed creator,” he added.

It is likely that the pair line up alongside Mount in United’s best midfield, with the England international taking Eriksen’s role as the no.8.

He is likely to play his second game for the team in United’s second friendly against Lyon next Wednesday before Ten Hag selects a team to head on the tour of the United States.
