Whilst on International duty, one of Liverpool’s star players has aimed a subtle dig at rivals Manchester United regarding their former player Scott McTominay.
The summer of 2024 saw Scott McTominay swap Manchester red for Naples blue after struggling to nail down a starting position in the Manchester United team.
After eight seasons in and out of the side, McTominay completed a £25m move to Napoli, where he featured alongside former Red Devil Romelu Lukaku under manager Antonio Conte.
The Scotsman took the Serie A by storm, playing a vital role in Napoli’s title-winning season. McTominay was named the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), as he scored 12 and assisted six in 34 league games.
McTominay joins a long list of players who have recently found success outside of United, with Antony, Jadon Sancho, and Marcus Rashford all seemingly enjoying their football elsewhere.
Robertson aims McTominay dig at United
Whilst on International duty, Scotland captain Andy Robertson has had some strong words for United, as he claims that McTominay’s former club may have disrespected the midfielder.
“I think he went over there with a point to prove,” Robertson said. “He wanted to prove Man United wrong and prove people in the Premier League wrong, and he’s gone over there and done that pretty successfully.
“That’s credit to him, credit to his attitude and his determination to be the best version of himself. Now he’s a king over there.
“At Man United, he probably lacked getting that run of games consistently, he was in and out and things like that. He probably didn’t get the respect he deserves.
“Then he goes over there, puts in a magnificent season and, fair play to him, he ends it with the league title.”
United’s recent midfield woes do not help
Although this may not be completely attributed to McTominay’s departure, United have struggled in the midfield department since the Scotsman left the club.
Since the arrival of Rúben Amorim, United have been seeking the perfect pair to partner together in the United pivot, but have struggled tremendously.
Academy star Kobbie Mainoo hasn’t been able to nail down a starting spot in this midfield like many hoped he would, whilst captain Bruno Fernandes has had to sacrifice a more attacking role in order to add some much-needed energy to the middle of the park.
Now that it looks likely for Fernandes to stay, this summer presents United with an opportunity to find him the perfect partner, and they will hope to find someone who makes as great an impact as former Red Devil McTominay has at Napoli.
